Hi,

I just finished installing Windows 8.1 Pro and now I can't print. Apparently I have an old printer, HP PSC 2210v, which is a printer/scanner. It was working fine under Win7 but apparently not under Win 8. I've been to the HP website but they no longer have the drivers for this model, however I DID find a site that does.

I downloaded the drivers but for some reason the printer won't trigger the installer. I'd hate to think that I'd have to buy a new printer after all of this!

I do have my old Win files but can't seem to find the drivers for this model.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Taz

If HP doesn't have drivers then a 3rd party site will not have drivers either. The printer mfgr is the only place where you should get drivers for a printer, scanner, or whatever it is you need.

Don't ever trust a 3rd party site for something like that. You could end up with malware. What web site gave you the drivers?

Windows does have built in drivers, they will not give you all the abilities that the mfgr drivers would give you but the generic built in driver may be enough. Have you just tried plugging in the printer and turning it on? Window 7, 8.1, and 10 all will look for and install the built in driver.

Read the information found there from HP:

Long time, no chat! :)

Well after my last experience, I'm not trusting (nor did I ever) 3rd party sites. I was at the HP site, but it is quite confusing. After searching around a bit (seems to be outdated with some info) I found a method to try to get at least basic printing. Went to Devices & Printers and tried to add it manually. Followed the prompts and it's taken me to Windows Updates where its taking a LONG time to respond. For the record, HP has a youtube video informing about 3rd party that has the driver! I don't trust it, I've been to their site and it looks iffy.

The files I did download say they are from the HP site but they don't work. I was looking for the file they say will work( hppiw.exe,) but it doesn't pop up anywhere in their links. In fact, their tools have trouble detecting my printer. One of them does, in fact, but it has now taken me to Windows update as the printer wasn't on the list they had.

Also I have the original installation disk, but it won't open....says it's not compatible with this O/S. Tried unplugging the USB cable and running the search program in addition to turning the printer off and back on to see if Windows would detect it. If I do that, it comes up in the Devices and Printers folder in Control Panel.

In any event, it still doesn't have the drivers it needs. Windows update has been running for 15 minutes and I think even IT'S out of ideas!

Punt?

I was at HP, I use HP printers. Never saw any link to YouTube Video. Can you give me that link? I will check it out. Also checked out that file you say you need, are you sure you have it correct because no drivers for anything HP came up when I checked it. In fact it said, "unknown".

Spent a few hrs trying to navigate the HP sites of all kinds. I couldn't find the video I saw, however they DO refer to their 'Youtube" video channel in the site video entitled "How to choose the best driver for your device".

The ONLY reference I saw to the printer model I have was from 2009 so I doubt it would work on 8.1. In any case, it looks like I'm out of luck at this point. The PC finds the printer, but the HP sites can't give me or find a set of drivers for it.

Like I said I have the orig disk but it is only good for O/S up to and including XP. I remember having to d/l drivers on at least 2 occasions to keep it updated. I have HDD backups but I can't find anything HP on them. Either they are hidden files in the system or they're gone....Do you know by chance where the installation disk would put the files/drivers on the HD? I could attempt to find them on the b/u files I have. Otherwise, I'm out of ideas.....

Honestly doubt you are going to find a driver that will work with this OS. One of the problems trying to use a 7 year old printer with new OS. Printer mfgrs can't continue to keep creating new drivers. Especially since these new OS's are so much different than one like XP. Remember 8.1 is the third os since XP.

I also did find the videos on the HP site and this was also listed there.

The drivers are often found in C:\Windows\System32\, not sure about 8.1.

you may find you need to install the printer program/drivers in compatibility mode when using a newer os like win 8 or 10. :-

from a quick search on the hp site it says the only thing you need to do to use that printer on windows 8 is to let windows itself find and install the needed drivers.

how to with answers to questions you may ask here. :- http://support.hp.co...ument/c01796879

Thanks for all you work and patience with this issue....as an aside, I also was able to restore my link to the NAS where all of my backed up files reside. So the PC is restored, cleaned up and back in business.

Hopefully it will stay that way!
