Hello

I am having trouble getting an answer as to whether or not one should perform a Factory data reset after moving up from one OS to another;  in this case Lollipop to Marshmallow.

Would a wipe partition suffice?

There must be a proper way to look aat this.

TY

Peter

If there is an upgrade path provided, I wouldn't reset it. And if no upgrade path, I still would not reset it. I don't see what purpose that would serve. I also see no reason to EVER "wipe" a partition, except when getting rid of a drive and I want to ensure no other person (evil or good) can find any of my personal information that may still be on that drive.

Bill, I have already wiped the partition b/c I was told to by 3 people. I won't again.

I am glad you told me not to reset. My phones were hot and draining the battery before the wipe and now seem ok. I hope they can just function without any further adjustments. The android forums are so adamant about resetting -it is criminal.

Thank you for replying.

???

So in the 44 minutes between your first post and your last post, 3 other people told you to wipe the partition? Where? Are you shotgun posting your question on other sites? Just so you know, that is typically considered poor forum etiquette because it ties up help resources and, as seen here, it results in conflicting and confusing advice. It also often results in dangling, unresolved threads, which is also not cool.

Wiping writes a bunch of random 1s and 0s in every singe storage location to ensure any previously saved data is overwritten and unrecoverable.

If a program or app was running causing your phones to run hot and draining the battery, uninstalling/deleting the app would have served the same purpose, without putting excess wear and tear on the drive.

First of all I appreciate the information regarding the phone.

Secondly, i go to a phone forum and post; I receive an opinion I am unsure about. I leave and try to find a clearer explanation at  forum specific to my phone. The reply is again contrary to the first and at odds with what I ascertained on the web.

I came here to see if someone could clarify the awkward answers i have received so far. I have always prided myself in returning to a forum and completing a thread I began.

I know you can be both helpful yet 'DI' and I did what I thought was the polite thing to do.

I am not saying you were being rude. I am just saying shotgun (or cross posting) is considered poor forum etiquette. It is like going to a busy grocery store and having all your kids stand in separate check out lines, then everyone runs over to the kid who reaches a cashier first while all the other customers wait their proper turns in line. It is just frowned upon.

:) That's great! It is really important to make sure you go back to every place you posted your question and post the resolution so the thread is not abandoned. I am glad you make sure you do that.
