Hopefully someone can help me…my son is in college and I just got a frantic call that his laptop died. It's only 2 years old and he wasn't experiencing anything strange prior to this. But when he just tried to turn on his computer (Acer Aspire M5), he got a message "default boot device missing". All his college work is on the laptop, so hopefully it can be safely recovered. Any suggestions on what to do?? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks, in advance.
sorry to say it may not be possible to recovery anything, that's the sort of error you'd expect when the hard drive has died.
first thing he needs to do is go into the laptops bios/uefi and see if the hard drive shows up in there, if it does then good, there's a chance of recovering his files if it doesn't then sorry the hard drive has failed and things are not looking good at getting his data back cheaply.
if the hard drive does show up in bios then the best way to recover his files is to create a live cd/usb of some sort that runs in memory only and can be used to copy files from the internal hard drive to an external hard drive.
