Chkdsk seldom runs as scheduled on Restart. Looking at the properties of the file Autochk in System32, it always says "This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer". No matter how many times I click the "Unblock" box, it goes back to being blocked after restarting.

Hi amitemurray,

Please do the following:

[external image: MgeHyNE.png] SFC /Scannow

  • Press the Windows Key [external image: pdKOQKY.png] + r on your keyboard at the same time. Type Notepad and click OK.
  • Copy the three bold lines below and paste into the Notepad document:

    sfc /scannow
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\desktop\CBS.txt"
    del %0

  • Click Format. Ensure Wordwrap is unchecked.
  • Click File, Save As and name the file sfcscannow.bat.
  • Select All Files as the Save as type. Save the file to your Desktop.
  • Locate sfcscannow.bat [external image: lmRDSkT.png] on your Desktop. Right-click the file and click [external image: AVOiBNU.jpg] Run as administrator.
  • Upon completion, a file (CBS.txt) will be created on your Desktop. Attach this file in your next reply.
  • Note: If the file is too large to attach, upload to a service such as Dropbox, One Drive or SendSpace and provide a direct download link in your next reply.

Hello amitemurray,

SURT confirms there is not an issue with files associated with CHKDSK.

 No errors detected

Can you tell me which Anti-Virus you have installed, please? Have you tried running CHKDSK with your Anti-Virus disabled (instructions)?

Unless you are running CHKDSK in read-only mode, I suggest you consider backing up important files prior to running.

Hello,

Perform a Clean Boot (instructions - change to Windows 7/Vista). Try running CHKDSK in this environment. Let me know if CHKDSK runs.

Revert the Clean Boot changes.

If CHKDSK did not run, boot into the Recovery Environment, access the Command Prompt and run CHKDSK (instructions).

Let me know how you get on.

Hi LiquidTension,

I performed Clean Boot. Chkdsk would not run (completely skipped it–not even the error message). I booted with Installation Disc, went to System Repair, Command Prompt, typed bcdedit | find "osdevice", changed to D: and typed chkdsk /f and got this message:

"Cannot lock current drive. Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? "

Ztruker,

It's Windows 7 Professional. I don't know how to do a screen capture on a DOS screen before Windows comes up.

Use a Digital Camera or you cell phone

Apologies for the delay in responding - busy weekend.

Thank you, LiquidTension and Ztruker. I've decided to go for a clean install of Windows 7.

OK, thank you for following up.
