Cartridge Conundrum

Thought I'd save a few bucks buying re-manufactured ink cartridges for my Epson 420 XP inkjet printer.  To my dismay, the printer "cannot recognize cartridge".

 

I've tried removing the cartridge, unplugging the printer for an hour, then installing the cartridge (as suggested elsewhere). But, this didn't work.

 

Hoping someone has a remedy for this before I bite the bullet and purchase the overpriced Epson cartridges.
