My laptop started running incredibly slow on new years eve & been not very good at computers I thought it was because of new years eve & network been busy. Of course it is not & I did not install anything new so know no reason why it suddenly would have slowed down. It takes 20 minutes to start up and 5 minutes to load google. I downloaded Football Manager 15 & Tropico 5 on Stream 1 week ago and neither will start. I looked at the system specs and could see no reason why it did not work. My laptop also only works when plugged in since 1 month ago and think gradually th laptop is dieing. Only owned it 2 years and would like not to have to buy a new one

I would not expect a system that old to be ready for the PC's graveyard, assuming that it's not one that is unfortunate enough to have become faulty, even if it were, it should still be possible to keep it going for many years, assuming it's nothing major that is wrong, but I am concerned that your battery has stopped working, laptops I've seen usually have a battery health check, does yours have this feature ?

But if you can run from the mains without having to have the battery connected, remove the battery and leave it out until we get this issue sorted first, but if you can start and run normally without the battery being in, then that is the problem straight off, if this is so we will not need to do the other option below, so let us know if this changes anything.

Lets have a quick check, start the PC up in Safe Mode, if this is software, driver or infection based, you should have they performance you had before this, to do this tap the F8 key once a second until you see a screen with options on, use the arrow keys to navigate to the Safe Mode option, then press Enter, it will scroll through a whole host of files onscreen, just let it do it's job.

Then when you get to the desktop, it will be much larger, with no wallpaper with Safe Mode in all 4 corners, and a help file will open, just close that window, and try running something and see how it feels, if it behaves then it wouldn't appear to be a hardware problem, so while your in that mode, try using System Restore to go back to before this happened, with luck it will do the job without lots of messing around.

To run this go to Start, then in the Search box type System Restore, and start the process, or if you know another way to access it just use that, it will suggest a restore point, if that date is before this started just proceed with that, otherwise choose another restore point that is before this happened, see if any of this helps, but ensure that you do not interrupt this process when started, it may take a while, but make sure you don't turn it off or remove the mains until finished, it will tell you if it was successful or not when your desktop loads again.

Edit by paws: sorry 8210GUY, I must learn to type a little quicker, as you beat me to sending in your reply, but its good to see we are both on the same wavelength… :D

Hi csenior and welcome to the WTT forums,
:welcome:

Sorry to hear that your laptop has developed the "slows"

Here are some thoughts for you on the steps you could consider taking:

1 Use a system restore point created before the slows developed to set back the settings of your computer to a time when it was working well…..any improvement?

2 Boot your computer into safe mode with networking and test your machine (but be careful as your protections will not be operating correctly in safe mode) so visit only this site www.bbc.co.uk, and do not ever open any attachments in any email!

4 Using Control Panel, in normal mode set up a new user account with administrative privileges and test your machine… time the boot up time when using this account…… any improvement?.

5 You have not provided any information on the make and model number of your computer, nor the operating system you are using (Vista, 7, 8 or 8.1 etc and if 32 or 64 bit) so we can't provide detailed instructions on any of this, but if you need detailed instructions just let us know the above information and we will be happy to help….

6 When using steps 1 to 3 above please test your machine thoroughly after completing each of the individual steps and restarting your computer each time and from a full shutdown (not a sleep or hibernate)
Regards
