Would you consider MBAM a good program for rootkit handling.

I noticed that the newest free version does not have rootkit checked off in settings so I checked it  - would you have done the same thing?

Thanks lee, I have the rootkit feature in my MBAM free edition but it is not checked off by default and wondered if that meant, 'user beware'. I currently have it unchecked after running a scan with it checked.

I am not sure if it should be checked unless you suspect something.

Something keeps changing my MSIE 11 security restricted level to the lowest and I am the only one on this pc. I keep having to restore the default.

Am I not getting it right and it is doing this appropriately as it catches bad guys or should it remain on the setting I put it on. I have SpywareBlaster, SAS, Defender and MBAM. Maybe one of the programs is doing it?

MBAM is a great product, and well worth the money, and this new version is very fast compared to it's predecessor, and more importantly light on resources, I have seen the rootkit question before about this, so I am able to tell you they left it unchecked by default, just incase users with older (less powerful systems) would be affected by this, as it obviously requires more resources, that's all.

I have mine checked, because I won't notice any difference having a reasonably spec'd system with 8gig of ram, so my opinion is if your system won't struggle with the box checked, then leave it checked, I also check the box to enable integration into Window's, it's under Settings - General Settings - Explorer Context Menu Entry, this allows you to scan a file(s) via right clicking on them, much easier for quickly checking if a new downloaded file is ok or not, that is if you are concerned if there is a possibility of anything sneaky going on so to speak.

As to your settings being changed, I can't say for sure, you would need someone more experienced than I in this area, but I would almost certainly put it down to some protection doing this, although I could be wrong, and if ever you have concern(s) about something going on, then definitely ask a pro to be safe.

But they are extremely busy people so try not to keep getting them to check your system every time you see something, not unless you are sure something is not right, eg pop up's, searches ending up on sites that are not what you want, generally you can feel something is not right, even though you may not be able to say what (specifically), but the Internet Explorer security settings should be set to the default option, not unless you really know what you're doing.

That's my understanding anyway, and if you're setting it to something other than default, and are finding it back on the default again, IMHO it has to be the protection doing this, if it keeps going to the lowest setting then I would want to ask a pro  (after running deep scans first) for their opinion to be safe, otherwise set it to default and leave it there, hope this helps.

PS: We posted at the same time there Guy

I have no idea what could be causing that problem with IE as I never bothered upgrading from IE8.

I use Pale Moon browser (the 32bit version only) which is resonably safe. It won't even let me open a download or run an executable in the browser window without first downloading to a folder or the desktop.

I use the Pro version of Mewarebytes and their seperate rootkit scanner. The FREE version probably has the rootkit scanner because it's still in the beta stage and that's good for testing purposes.

If there is a rootkit on your PC, I think there would be more going on that just altering your IE sercurity level.

For the cheap price I would certainly recommend upgrading to the pro version of Melwarebytes. It works live and will stop you from going to any internet page with embeded Melware, or prevent going to any link page containing Melware.

Peter I know you are very security conscious (especialy as you do online banking), so I find it rather troubling that you still use IE (any version).

90% of all Microsft security updates since time began, were for vunerabilities being found and are still being found in IE!

I not only never use IE, I have it completely disabled and I don't even do online banking.

When I want to check for general security updates, then and only then do I enable IE.

I will check rootkit in MBAM as I have 6 GB's in each machine and don't notice any issues. I thought it was still beta and that's why they were being cautious. - thanks for that.

I notice that SpywareBlaster affects MSIE11's restricted zone and after researching I read that there is a conection there.

I use MSIE  but not for banking. I have a Linux live cd for that. Trusteer rapport was good but slowed me down. I interchangeably use FF MSIE and Chrome but Chrome most of all.

Thank you for that also.

MSIE is not compatible here as my replies are strike throughs [until I fix them] and there are other incompatibilities like pasting and spell check. MS messed up reset and refresh with no patch so why not messing up these other features. They are on a roll. :adios:
