One of the reasons XP takes so long to show the Network Icons, is that it scans all the networks its connected to to see if it can log onto any other boxes.
This is a default function which can be switched off as follows.
Control Panel
Folder Options
View
Uncheck "Automatically search for network folders and printers"
Most users will have this on as default. Removing it speeds up your boot-up and prevents XP from trying to access other network resources you don't already have mapped.
Additionally, you want to clean out all the junk files on your computer that accumulate over time simply from using it. I would recommend downloading CCleaner and running it periodically. Get it here: CCleaner Free
Don't mess with the Issues area unless you take the time to read about it and understand exactly what it is. Also uncheck anything in the Windows and Applications tab that you don't want deleted, primarily Cookies and History. If you have not kept your hard drive clean of these files you'll be amazed at how much junk collects over time.
Run Analyze first so you can see what will be deleted and how much space it's taking up, then run Cleanup.
