Hello

I have a Dell XPS 8300 and a Dell Inspiron which have usb 2.0 ports.

Can I get an adapter that does not need to get into the pc to plug usb 2 devices into?

I was thinking of the external HDD and its transfer rate.

Wouldn't there need to be one at each end so the external drive and pc would be compatible?

Thank you

Peter

Hi Peter, USB 3 adapters are available for laptop computers and here's a link
https://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=&oq=usb3+pcmcia+adapter&hl=en-GB&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGNI_en-GBGB560GB560&q=usb3+pcmcia+adapter&gs_l=hp..0.0j0i22i30l4.0.0.0.9569………..0.VhKVfuwnRqk

USB 3 adapters are also available for desktop computers.

However its important to remember that this sort of adapter will work just fine and allow faster
transfer speeds than USB 2… but the device you plug in to the USB port must be USB3 compatible.

If you want to get a faster transfer speed for an external hard drive that you own already then check
its literature as it will say if it is USB 3 compatible or not… if its only compatible with USB 2 then it wont go any faster despite fitting a USB adapter to your computer.

Hope this makes sense

yes a usb 3 external hard drive will plug into and work in a usb2 port.

you might get a slight speed benefit but nothing worth talking about.

the problem is a usb2 port has a maximum transfer rate of about 480Mbs(about 60MBs), but a usb3 port has a maximum transfer rate of about 5Gbs (about 625MBs).

now say the hard drive is capable of transfering data at speeds of 100MB (about 800Mbs) and has a usb3 connection on it,

connected to a usb 2 port it is going to be limited to 60MBs but when attached to a usb 3 port it will be capable of being used at it's full speed of 100MBs

hope that fully explains everything you wanted to know.

This is what was something I came across," HDDs have their own transfer rate and they adapt to any device you plug them in to."

I guess this means once they are deemed compatible as you say. Yes you have answered my questions and thank you both.

Peter
