i don't know if it is just this version of windows now, but when i try to download something, it just gets saved to a download file, i have no choice, it just offers to save the file. huh? i used to click on something, and the download would begin. no big deal i guess, when i can just go to the download file, click on the icon and the down load starts. i do this once a week with a jigsaw puzzle i like to get for free every week. but, today, i had to go find free security software…. this toshiba came with avast but it was only a temporary free program….. so at the end of it, i switched over to AVG….today is the last day of AVG, so after 15 mintues of trolling thru forum articles, i found one where the word AVAST was underlined …. i clicked on it was brought to a page to download the file, or buy the good version….i am elderly and just do not have $40 spare dollars any month of the year….so clicked on the basic download…and sure enough, i have to save the file, it won't run….. then when i go into the download folder and click on it, it wants me choose a program to run it with???? HUH??????? come on. i can't figure this out. what happened to the good old days when you clicked on a download and it RAN??????? I NEED some protection. today!!!!!! thanks guys.
LOL…. i never know how to answer these questions, like in reality i guess people know these things but i don't live in that world. I know i am using firefox because i hated internet explorer, you guys have to admit, i am not here as often as i once was, i was always getting viruses on internet explorer and i have lost 5 years of life due to the stress of getting rid of all those trojans. i think this must be windows 7 because i have seen ads for windows 8 and i don't do upgrades, because it is nice and safe in whatever rut i was forced into when i had to buy this new laptop to replace the one i killed (only 7computers to date, at least i keep up with technology this way, buying new computers, which is bankrupting me ( and not the advisable route, but i do not have a geek orientated friend….so what's an old fart like me to do but turn to you guys???? LOL) oh MIGOSH….wait…look!!!!! there are stickers on the keyboard here….. intel core, energy star and ……………and…………WINDOWS SEVEN!!!!! lol. ain't life grand????????
No problem. Update your personal info via My Controls at the top to indicate you have Windows 7 and not XP.

For Firefox, click on the orange Firefox drop down at the top left of the window.
Select Options then Options again.
Click on the General tab and check Always ask me where to save files.

That should fix the problem for you.
but it already was ….. options, general….. always ask me is…and was…. clicked….. so something isn't working. i am now out of time and options, lol….. i can't open the darn avast download because it wants me to choose an application to use and everything i click on doesn't work or i don't know what to do with. i hate being this stooooooopid. didn't you guys have a page that listed all the recommended things we have installed on our computers? I remember using that page, i got my avast, my malwarebytes from it….. and a few other programs that detected malware…… where is that page here? maybe if i download from your page???????????????? just clutching at straws here, lol ok. am going off line. am out of options. and do not want to run this computer with little to no security. thanks for trying to help. ………… she slinks off, red faced, tired and hating computers even more than ever……. and being old ain't so much fun either. suicide is a definite option when you get this old and this stooooopid, lol….. have a great day out there…… and everyone???? pray for Oklahoma. …….. please.
Stop belittling yourself, you are doing fine.

What version of Firefox are you using. To find out, click on the orange Firefox button at the top left of the Firefox window. Select Help then About Firefox. The current version is 20.0.1.

To download Avast, go here: Avast! Free Antivirus 8.0.1489
Click on Download latest version at top right:

You should get the Download dialog: Click Save file

📎AvastDownload2.jpg

You should then get the Save dialog: pick where you want to download to then click Save

The small down pointing arrow at the top right of the Firefox window is how you now access your downloads.
