Try rebooting and see what happens.
When you say the mouse makes a beeping noise when it moves, are you saying it's the mousepad and not a "plugged-in" mouse that makes the noise?
I believe the sound was coming from under the mouse touchpad, however I also have a external keyboard which I am shy to say once unpluged cleared the problem, there may have been something spilt on it ( the other half tells me)
the screen is now stable and all working o.k. now I have unplugged and removed the keyboard.

To be honest I don't think we need to check for malware. The fact that you have re-installed XP means your computer should be OK.
I would really like to recover some of my old data but not sure if that is possible
You could have done that if you had asked for help before re-installing but as you did a clean install I would say that it is unlikely that it's recoverable.
It might be worth starting a topic in our Windows forum to ask the experts and also get help if you have other hardware problems.
Satchfan,
Thanks for your help, yes I am aware I should have made a copy of the data but with the frustration of the issues I acted before I thought.
I think it is time to close the topic, and thanks again for your help.
