[Resolved] My friend REALLY has a messed up computer

My friends computer is messed up. I'm posting this first post from my computer, but with her results/logs/scans. It's runs slow in IE, and hijacks frequently to porn and other sites. Apparently her teenage kids download a lot of stuff and while she uses it for school, it's been the "family computer up until recently.

Here's what I've done:

Ran the disk cleaner (is it necessary to download a program like ccleaner or atf cleaner? I just used the one in System Tools)

She didn't have a working antiviral software installed

Downloaded AVG free (the computer wouldn't let me go to the website, so I had to go to the download site in a roundabout way…that worked)
AVG couldn't update, no matter what. Checked settings(good), checked internet connection (good)…finally uninstalled.

Downloaded Avast Home edition (again, her computer wouldn't let me to the site, so I had to bypass the site)

Ran Avast Thorough scan and found:
Win32:Adware-gen (adw)
Win32:Spyware-gen (Trj)
Win32:Trojan-gen (other)
Win32:Trojan-gen (other)
Win32:Rootkit-gen (Rtk)
Win32:Trojan-gen (other)
Win32:FakeAV-AQ (Trj)
6 more Win32:Trojan-gen (others)

Not being familiar with Avast, I "Moved to Chest", everything it found.

On her list of Programs, I found Speedrunner.exe. Upon a quick internet search, I believe that is malware. I removed it from the programl ist. Not sure if it's found elsewhere too…probably is.

I also found the following processes running that COULD be malicious (but may NOT be, too…I didn't do anything to/with these, just noticed them): lsass, msmsgs, services, winlogon, csrss, smss

Also, her computer won't let me onto this site, or any other anti-malware product site (Trend Micro, AVG, Avast, etc.)

No I'm not because her computer won't let me onto this site! I keep getting hijacked away from it. I finally managed to download HJT onto her computer, ran the scan and sent the results to my laptop via email. So I've got both laptops on, sitting here. SHall I keep trying to get onto this site from her computer? I don't know how to, besides what I've already tried (via a link through google, and manually typing in the URL…neither way works.)
OK. So you have the laptop at your finger tips and can perform this:
Using her laptop do the following.

Unable to access websites

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

NOTE: worksnow is actually Combofix renamed so user is able download and run Combofix

Download worksnow from HERE:

* IMPORTANT !!! Save worksnow to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on worksnow & follow the prompts.

Note: worksnow will run without the Recovery Console installed.

Note: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed.

  • As part of it's process, combofix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Download to your Desktop FixPolicies.exe, a self-extracting ZIP archive from here: http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/BillCa…FixPolicies.exe
  • Double-click FixPolicies.exe.
  • Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open.
  • The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies.
  • Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd.
  • A black box will briefly appear and then close. This will enable your Control Panel and stop the Administrative warnings, at least until the malware infection resets the registry policy keys again. You can run this as many times as you like.

Now run a new Combofix scan.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

[external image: Posted Image]

The computer is now allowing me to go to THIS site, and the other ones that it originally wasn't. No hijacking!!! So far so good.
Question: I notice on some of the logs that it's finding a Norton program (a/v) and Mozilla…I can't find that anywhere on her computer. Also, I noticed she doesn't have IE 7…would it be okay to upgrade that?
It looks like Nortons / Symantec was installed at one time.

Copy/paste the text in the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the text in the box below, then click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text. Now release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'. Now over the empty Notepad box, right click your mouse again, and select 'paste' and you will have copied and pasted the text.

Folder::
c:\documents and settings\Tami Rasel\Application Data\Symantec
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:
1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save …

[external image: Posted Image]

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Then post the results log and a new HijackThis log.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

After the above:

Yes you can install IE7 if you want.

I'm headed to bed so you can now do this:

Good job

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]

To be on the safe side, I would also change all my passwords.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
I know you are now off to bed, so this will just be for you tomorrow….or whenever :)

Also, what should I do with the files in the Chest, in the avast program?

Do I keep the stuff you had me download (worksnow/combofix, FixPolicies, etc.)?

Do you recommend I keep that program over AVG (try and reinstall it perhaps?)

If she were to delete the other user profiles, how would that affect the system and it's security, having gone through all this?

Thanks so much. I wouldn't know what I'd do without you guys…I've had such wonderful experiences with you and that's why I keep coming back! I have managed to pretty much keep my systems pretty clean with all I've learned here.

Also, what should I do with the files in the Chest, in the avast program?

Remove them.

Do I keep the stuff you had me download (worksnow/combofix, FixPolicies, etc.)?

No.
You could keep MBAM and ATF cleaner. Run them once a week.

Do you recommend I keep that program over AVG (try and reinstall it perhaps?)

I'll assume you're talking about Avast4. If it's working ok, I'd keep it.

If she were to delete the other user profiles, how would that affect the system and it's security, having gone through all this?

Before doing that you need to make sure there isn't anything in those profiles she wants.
I just ran MBAM and found some stuff:

beats me. After just doing a search, I see it's a valid program, but it was obviously corrupt…right? The fact that uTorrent was installed on the computer…is it possible to download something like Webtools from that? So, are we clean? Should I create a new restore point? Is this a situation where scanning in Safe Mode is warranted?

Yes to both.

Good job

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
