Okay, not a super computer tech person, shame on me. Struggling to maintain our home computer and my kids (college age) laptops which connect to our home network. The main desktop computer had a bunch of garbage on it and I ran adware, spybot and even did the Trend Micro safe mode clean up. However, I think one of the kids accidently downloaded something that continues to generate popups and even more importantly, in addition to these popups I am actually getting directed to websites that pop up in a new window when I am searching or going to a similar website. Need to clean this stuff up. I have turned off my windows restore and rebooted after running spy and adware. Finally, I also need to set up my daughters new laptop Toshiba, just out of the box and could use suggestions on things to do immediately before I connect to the internet for the first time to make sure this new computer is fully protected. Thank you all for the great service you provide vicky
Okay, here is the log file for the desktop

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
You have P2P Networking on your computer. I recommend removing it along with the File Sharing program that it came installed with. This is not technically malware by itself, but it installs malware in order to run properly and it opens the door for every other nasty program you can think of. Read this article for alternatives that will provide some of the same function without the garbage: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ If you opt to remove it, first use Add/Remove Program to remove the File Sharing program and any reference to Altnet and P2P Networking. Go to your control panel, then to add/remove programs…uninstall P2P networking…If/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say 'Yes'.
P2P Networking is a totally useless File Sharing add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the following items (if found):

Orbit
P2P Networking
<< if fixed above.

Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 4
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\Svchost.exe << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ndllzxy.exe << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\system32\twink64.exe << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\system32\w?nspool.exe<< The ? in this file could be any letter or symbol. (The file should have an icon that resembles a building block).
C:\WINDOWS\system32\system32.dll << File Only
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\bridge.dll << File Only

C:\Program Files\Orbit << Whole Folder
C:\Program Files\sami << Whole Folder
C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking << Whole folder if fixed above.

You'll need to search for these files with Explorer to delete. They may be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ or C:\WINDOWS\
(Start > Search > All files and folders > More advanced options place a check in the first three boxes)

svchhhost.exe

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 5
Download CWShredder.exe to your desktop from one of these places:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3019
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshr…r_download.html
http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe

Double click on CWShredder.exe to clean up clicking FIX -> to have it remove all it finds. Reboot when completed.

Step 6
Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • Click Options < Advanced and uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
  • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • After it has completed it's process, click Exit.
Caution : It is not recommended to use the 'Issues' tab as it is known to find legitimate items.

Step 7
Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Okay Alan, I have a couple of questions. 1. When you say I need to change the passwords on this computer due to the trojan, do you mean just the paswords on this computer as in user access or rather do you mean any password that we might have to access things online such as online banking and other online website access? 2. With regards to P2P, I have no problems removing things such as that Kaza program, but does P2P mean that I will disrupt my home network? We use our home network primarily to share internet access and occasionally printers. We do not use file shareing within the network. I can live without the file sharing between home computers, but I need the printer sharing capability. By doing the OPTIONal items P2P network, i wont disrupt our home network will I? thanks again vicky

C:\WINDOWS\system32\w?nspool.exe<< The ? in this file could be any letter or symbol. (The file should have an icon that resembles a building block). found two application files one with a symbol called winspool.exe which i deleted. the other had no sysmbol and it the computer came up with an error message that said this was a microsoft system file and should not be deleted so i did not delet it
C:\WINDOWS\system32\system32.dll << File Only file not found
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\bridge.dll << File Only file not found

C:\Program Files\Orbit << Whole Folder not found
C:\Program Files\sami << Whole Folder not found
C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking << Whole folder if fixed above. deleted

You'll need to search for these files with Explorer to delete. They may be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ or C:\WINDOWS\
(Start > Search > All files and folders > More advanced options place a check in the first three boxes)

svchhhost.exe file not found

5. CW shredder downloaded. It did not find anything.

thanks again
That log looks much better.

When you say I need to change the passwords on this computer due to the trojan, do you mean just the paswords on this computer as in user access or rather do you mean any password that we might have to access things online such as online banking and other online website access?

I would recommend changing all of these passwords to be on the safe side. You can read about that Trojan here.

Here are some optional items to remove which may help the computer run faster.

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

This is a registration reminder that is used by a number of different companies. It is not needed and some experts think that it reports back to the company about your computer, so I suggest fixing this entry with HijackThis then removing it with Add/Remove Programs.
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required either way.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Remove uninstall entry with HijackThis
  • Open Hijackthis and click None of the above, just start the program.
  • Click Config… < Misc Tools < Open Uninstall Manager.
  • Scroll down to the KaZaA entry and click on it once, then select Delete this entry.
Delete this file if found:

C:\WINDOWS\ASFWIN.SYS

Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
If the computer is working better, I'll give your some recommendations to better secure it.
Thank you for your response

I removed the startup Powerreg and the Global Startup using Hijack this fix. I could not find the startup:powerReg in the add remove programs area.

I uninstalled Kaza using Hijakthis

I found and deleted ASFWIN.sys

Before I you get to the new log. I just wanted to say thank you for your help. I have three laptops in addition to this computer I am trying to manage and I just don't have the expertise to handle this. My laptop is for work and My kids laptops (they are in college) are a mess so I will also have to start a string for each one of them. However, my daughter's laptop is brand new so I would appreciate any advise as to what to put on her laptop to help keep it from becoming a mess.

I just want you to know that I will be sending a donation for all your assistance. I dont know what I would have done without your help.

reboot and here is the new log

Thank you
Your new log appears clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:
These are what I would recommend to install on your daughter's new laptop to help prevent infections.

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
Thank you again for all your help. I will be implementing all your advise. I just want you to know that I made a donation yesterday. I hope that it in someway is able to help ya'll maintain this valuable service to "idiots" like me. Thank you again. Vicky Lohman
