Hi

I am running PC with windows 7.
I have had a fake antivirus warning that leads me to a dialogue box to purchase system-repair-software.com and even though I haven't bought it I canot close the box, I can't open any other program, nor can I use Alt-Ctrl-Del to enter Task Manager and stop it.
I have rebooted but all I get is a black screen with some of my program icons. When I click the 'Start' button there is only the Logitech Media Server icon there and no others (though I can access them by typing their name in the dialog box).

Neither McAfee nor Spybot show any evidence of infection.
I understand that this trojan hides loads of files in hidden directories so I can imagine it will be a swine to fix.

When I ran the HiackThis program from th elink in your 'Infected?' checklist, I did not get the chance to save it to the desktop, but I ran it anyway and here is logfile

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.4

Welcome to the forum.

Try this………..

Reboot into safe mode with network support.

To do this, turn your computer off and then back on and immediately when you see anything on the screen, start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Eventually you will be brought to a menu similar to the one below:

http://www.bleepstatic.com/swr-guides/tool…-networking.jpg

Next…download rkill from the link below: use the iExplore.exe version , if that one won't run..try a different one until you get one that runs.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/

That should kill the virus…don't reboot!

Now download, update and run Malwarebytes as outlined in the link below:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo…alware-tutorial

Let me know…MrC
That worked! You guys are fantastic. I had to run Malwarebytes twice (I am not sure rkill had loaded properly before the first Malwarebytes scan) but it is now clean. And I had to rebuild my Start Menu and put the wallpaper back in but everything looks good now.
OK, but we should run some more scans to make sure:

Download DDS from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com

Temporarily disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.
Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.
Then double click dds.scr or dds.com to run the tool, on Vista or Win 7 or Win 8 right click and select Run as administrator
Click the Run button if prompted with an Open File - Security Warning dialog box.
A black DOS console should open and run for a moment.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs: DDS.txt and Attach.txt
Save both reports to your desktop
Please Copy & Paste the contents of the following logs in your next reply
You can ignore the note about zipping the Attach.txt file

Then………

Please remove any usb or external drives from the computer before you run this scan!

Please download and run RogueKiller to your desktop.

http://tigzy.geekstogo.com/Tools/RogueKillerX64.exe <—use this one for 64 bit systems

Quit all running programs.

For Windows XP, double-click to start.
For Vista or Windows 7-8, do a right-click on the program, select Run as Administrator to start, & when prompted Allow to run.

Click Scan to scan the system.
When the scan completes > Close out the program > Don't Fix anything!

Don't run any other options, they're not all bad!!!!!!!

Post back the report which should be located on your desktop.
