It started with faulty i-Tunes, after uninstalling it could not be effectivelly reinstalled, message informed that bonjour could not be installed due to the absence of admininstrators rights. Right clicking and selecting administrators' download did not work. System restore did not solve the problem. I suspect I might have unwittingly changed something in the registry while using revo uninstaller.
Firefox works badly and often crashes. Malwarebytes did not detect any infection. Avira fails to operate since now because aparently some component is missing.
I am abroad now and out of my comfort zone but must work online to prepare some legal work for 7 Jan so I would be very grateful for help in sorting out my netbook asap.

Dear Nina
Thank you for responding. I sent my response to your box because I could not respond like I am now because I was getting error messages. Now suddenly I am able to send this quick answer. DDS and MBR do not open to scan my netbook and I get the mesage that Windows cannot access the file and I have no permission to access the file. This happens with every single programme I have including Avira. I must have messed up my registry. I would be happy to reinstall Windows because I have another laptop at home as a main computer with all my records. I am now abroad and returning to London tomorrow, Friday. Maybe doing something in safe mode could help. Please let me know what I can be done in these circumstances.
I am greatly impressed by your superior intellectual capabilities in the circumstances. I read you short introduction. I have no words to express it.
My best regards.
Christina
Bonjour is likely to be the problem, not you having "changed something in the registry". This is quite a common problem.
The reason for not being able to open the programs may be Malwarebytes so you could try disabling it first.
If that doesn't work, try safe mode with networking:
restart your computer.
when the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows Advanced Boot Options menu
select the option for Safe Mode with networking using the arrow keys
then press Enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.
Let me know if that works.
It would be a shame to have to re-install Windows so if you're willing to try, I'm willing to help.
If you would rather wait until you return to the UK tomorrow, I'll wait for a couple of days until you are settled back home.
