My son's laptop recently had the BSOD (stating IRQL not less or equal) and on restarting we were given the option of restarting normally or starting Windows Repair (recommended), which is what we did. It was after this process that the errors started: - on start up we get the message that IAStorIcon has stopped working - Microsoft Office programs won't start (Word & Excel) - on trying to launch his Sims games, we are told that the Sims3 launcher has stopped working none of these errors were present before the repair process was started and unfortunately it is not the first time he has had the BSOD, though it hasn't happened for a while - it is though the first time we have run Windows repair! Searching on the web I have found all sorts of advice from deleting files (which I don't want to rush into) to suggesting malware (have run Malwarebytes which found nothing) Any help would be much appreciated Thanks
Do a System Restore from the Win 7 install DVD. If you do not have a Windows 7 installation DVD, you can download a legal copy with SP1 integrated from here: Official Windows 7 SP1 ISO from Digital River.
Make sure you get the same version you have, Home Premium, Pro or Ultimate and 32 or 64 bit. Note that Basic or Starter is not available.

I recommend using ImgBurn at 4X speed (or the slowest available) to create the DVD from the downloaded .iso file.

You can do this on any computer capable of burning a DVD.

For techies or folks who work on computers: Create Windows 7 Universal ISO With All Editions Selection On Install with ei.cfg Removal Utility.
This will fit on a 6GB flash drive or can be burned to a DVD.

Finally, see here: How to Boot to the System Recovery Options in Windows 7
If I do a system restore, what will happen to all my son's files, programs and saved game data? Incidentally I did try system restore from the Control Panel to an earlier time but the errors were still there
If you've already tried System Restore then there is no point doing it from the DVD. Please zip up the .dmp files in C:\Windows\minidump then upload and attach them to a post here.
