H, i i have an eeepc netbook and all of a sudden it has started to run really slowly for no apparent reason, its been a nightmare. I had windows essentials as my virus protection as recommended by one of the guys on here. I tried uninstalling it and installed avast free anti virus to see if that would make a difference but to no avail. Can someone pleasse help me as i have limited knowledge so not sure what else to try. Thanks Col

how full is your hard drive? if there's not a lot of free space left, then this can effect the performance severely.

Hi Colin,
OK, we will start with the easy stuff first!

1 Try using System Restore to put your computer back in time to a restore point well before the problem started...(note this should not affect your datafiles (unless you are unwise and leave them on your desktop!)
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
However it will stop any applications that you have installed since the date of the system Restore from running so you may have to reinstall them again if they are needed. (but lets get it running OK first before you reinstall anything!)
your computer should reboot of its own accord and eventually you will arrive at your desktop.... do not try and interrupt the Restore process or allow the computer to be powered down
during the process (make sure the netbook's battery is fully charged and the mains electricity is connected in the usual way before you start.

2 Run chkdsk with the r switch
Start>Run
type in the white box
chkdsk /r
note the space it needs to be there
press the Enter key
at the black warning select Y press Enter
restart your computer
chkdsk will run, do not interrupt it.... it may take several hours to complete all 5 passes..when its done it will restart your computer.

3 Run the Windows Protected System File Checker SFC
Start>Run>type in the white box
sfc /scannow
note the space it needs to be there
Press the Enter key
The scanner will start and replace or repair any protected windows System Files that are damaged , missing or in the incorrect locations. SFC will find good copies of the required files from within your computer, and you will see a progress bar to let you know how things are progressing.... this scan will take half an hour or so but if missing/damaged files are found and they cannot be replaced from other parts of your computer you will be asked to insert your Windows XP installation disc so thqat good copies may be copied over to the dll cache.

In these circumstances, you will therefore need to arrange to have an external CD drive handy (USB) and a copy of your Win XP installation disc...if you need to borrow these from a chum that's fine just make sure the Win XP installation is the same version Win XP Home on most netbooks and with SP3...SP2 may do at apinch but SP3 is better)

Now reboot you computer and advise how its performing...any differences?
We will then advise the next steps for your consideration
Regards

hi i tried to do a system restore but it only offered me one restore point which was 13th of this month which isnt early enough also the system restore point offered is showing that it was a critical update. i ticked the box to show other restore points but it still only shows the one I wasn't able to try the other fixes as when i go into the start menu there is no 'run' option ive looked around a little but cant find it anywhere col

Hi Colin, if the Run command is not on the right hand side of the window (towards the bottom) when you click on the Start button, then we can tackle this another way... if you really don't see a run box, then: 1 Right-click the start menu 2 Click Properties 3 Click Customize 4 Click Advanced 5 Scroll down to the box in the list that says "Run Command" Click OK You should now find Run under All Programs... Let us know how things go Regards paws

Hi Colin, Ok I understand. Try this: Run the commands from a command prompt and see if that does the trick at the white box type: cmd and press the enter key you should arrive at a DOS box....(or what looks like a DOS box) type in chkdsk /r press Enter key press Y press Enter key and the Dos box should disappear ..if it doesn't then type exit press Enter key and it will disappear. Restart computer and chkdsk will commence checking your hard drive... you should also be able to run sfc /scannow in a similar way Regards paws

I tried that it is now saying 'access denied as you do not have sufficient privileges. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode'
