Operating system - Win 7, on HP-DV6 laptop, Anti-virus - Microsoft Security Essentials

Hi hoping someone can help, I'm worried my pc may still be infected. Yesterday my anti-virus scanner, MSE found several viruses, initially it just flagged up Exploit: Java/CVE-2012-1723.DS but after checking the scan history I noticed several Trojans had also been quarantined, i.e. Trojan:WIN64/sirefef.AA . which was the only one I wrote down before removing them all but all had similar names, just different endings I think. I next ran Malware bytes which found TrojanDropper.BC.Miner. All items found were listed as either high or severe threat level

Current situation- After removing and restarting pc, I ran full scans again with MSE and malwarebytes, result was no malicious items found. I also scanned using Microsoft Safety Scanner, Super-anti spyware-and Kaparsky TDSS Killer, all scans came back clean. MSE is now running normally, status is green, (fully protected) and have had no other symptoms since.
I also used Secunia to check everything updated, updated Flash and uninstalled Java as the java/cve virus seems to be down to an out of date version of Java, (I had thought it would be ok as firefox had disabled it.)

Other possibly related symptoms – for past few days I’ve noticed MSE, (Microsoft Security Essentials) status changing to orange (potentially unprotected) and advising me I hadn’t run a scan for a while, which was odd as I had and should be updated/ scanned automatically. After manually updating/ scanning status changed to green/ protected but seemed to keep reverting to orange again later- I guess the virus was disabling my anti-virus, although the orange status also seems to be happening on my old desktop pc too, which hasn’t thrown up any viruses so far. Could just be coincidence on desktop PC as don’t use as often so MSE may just have needed updating. Also just came across a post that reckoned using CCleaner could be deleting things MSE needs, causing it to forget scans have been run, (have now unchecked MS Antivirus from Ccleaner, waiting to see if that works on desktop). For last few days I was not able to move one of my personal folders, just kept getting message that one or more files in it was open, even after a re-start, so definitely wasn’t open and checked it wasn’t in process of being indexed. Also recycle bin may have moved from where I placed it but that may have happened a while ago as had post it notes on top.

Hijack this log below and many thanks in advance

Hi altylou,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

As we work through your logs. Please remember to run any tools by Right-clicking on the icon and selecting Run As Administrator….

Let's try this.

Download ComboFix:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Hi Tomk Thankyou so very much for offering to help. I've run combo fix, hopefully as instructed, (I double clicked on icon rather than right clicked to choose with admin privleges but hopefully still ok as UAC popped up and asked for administrator password. I've turned my anti-virus (MSE) back on now,, hope thats right, but left super-anti spyware off for now. You did perfect.

Log is looking good. Let's get an online scan.

Go here to run an online scanner from ESET.
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activeX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • When the scan completes, press the LIST OF THREATS FOUND button
  • Press EXPORT TO TEXT FILE , name the file ESETSCAN and save it to your desktop
  • Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Press the BACK button.
  • Press Finish
Hi Tomk Just using another pc to let you know I havn't disapeared, just the ESET scanner is takjng a very long time, still only up to 29%, but seems to be running fine so don't think it's frozen or anything, I guess it's just very thorough. Anyway so far so good, it hasn't found any threats yet and I'm relieved to hear nothing showed up in the combo fix log, but not counting my chickens just yet. Will post eset scan as soon as it's finished
Yep. Eset takes hours. Often it will find infected files… even though the infection might not be active. It could just be sitting there waiting for you to run the file so that it can infect/reinfect you.
Hi Tomsk the ESET scanner finished with 0 threats found, so hopefully that's a good sign, but there didn't seem to be a `list of threats found' button. Not sure if this is just because it didn't find any threats or if I did something wrong. NB: I ran it using Internet Explorer (as it needed to download extra stuff to use Firefox, my usual browser). I haven't uninstalled ESET yet so it's still in my programes folder but the only item described as a log just has the following in it. ESETSmartInstaller@High as CAB hook log: OnlineScanner64.ocx - registred OK OnlineScanner.ocx - registred OK
I'd like you to run one more scan for me… just because sirefef was found. It sometimes borks some services.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure "Include All Files" option remains checked.
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.
Yes from the info I read sirefef sounds very scarey, lots of stuff about identify theft and having to reinstall the operating system etc. By the way I've been meaning to ask- is it likely or even possible for my desktop pc to have got infected at the same time, I mean as they're both on same wifi broadband? Nothings come up in any scans on that pc and don't think they're actually networked, as I tried but gave up as they're on different operating systems, but I did have firefox and xmarks synced. I'm probably being really thick but I don't really understand how networking works. Thanks for all your help with this so far, it really is a massive relief to have somewhere to turn for support with this Anyway back to Farbar, there was no `include all files' option so I checked all boxes instead, hope thats correct? That all looks good.

Sirefef is continually evolving. It's a nasty bugger for sure. I'm quite pleased that it appears that your MSE did a good job of killing it. Obviously some of commercial anti-virus solutions are catching up with at least some aspects of it with viable definitions. It is possible for multiple computers connected on a network to get infected… and there are some infections that specifically try to exploit network shares. However, up to this point, I haven't seen any version of Zero Access (sirefef) attack network shares. I believe you would have to share (and activate) the infected files on both computers to pass the infection. To specifically answer your question… it is possible, but probably not likely and even less likely seeing as how they are not actually networked.

I believe you are good to go.

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Now to remove most of the tools that we have used in fixing your machine:
  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Download OTC to your desktop and run it
  • A list of tool components used in the cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTC to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Clean up's all done now, inc Eset scanner uninstalled, info was all crystal clear. Also thanks for answering my question re my other pc and for all the links re malware. I'd already read some of it as I've been trying to work out how I got infected in the first place,I'm still not clear, really thought I was careful and reasonably savvy online but obviously not enough. Certainly gonna be much more careful now and start doing regular back ups. Anyway I can't thank you enough for all your help and especially for presenting instructions in a way that is so clear and easily understood. Many many thanks Lou :D
