So my laptop's charger just stopped working one day, i started using my mother and sister's chargers for their laptops and their computers are completely different from the one i have. It worked for a while and then one day smoke started coming from the charger area so i figured i'd stop using them and instead i used my roommates charger and she had the same computer as me but instead of charging my computer it made her charger stop working for an hour or so. Now i dont know what to do. Can i just get a new battery and charger? can i take it somewhere to be fixed? or should i just get a new laptop all together?
You didn't make any mention about what brand or model of laptop you have. At the very least, it sounds like you have a damaged power jack on the motherboard. It can be repaired, but finding a place that can actually do it correctly AND at an affordable price will be a tough one. Not "every" computer shop, nor every computer "tech," can do that kind of repair. Ultimately, if its an older laptop you should probably consider replacing it. A fair price to do the power jack repair would be $100-$125 in my opinion. An older laptop just might not be worth putting that kind of money into - and if you don't get a qualified professional to do the job you'll just be throwing your money away. Make sure it has a warranty in writing. You didn't mention if the laptop powers on at all. If you've damaged the motherboard, there is hardly any circumstance where it would be worth replacing.
Hi Danielaa,
Welcome to the WTT forums.
As well as the usual excellent advice provided by appleoddity, I could not help noticing the comment that you made here:

I know this is a bit late in the day, for me to say this…but but for the benefit of anyone else who may be reading this topic (perhaps found it via a search engine for example) and for anyone's future use of a laptop/notebook/netbook type computer……
It is very unwise to use a charger (PSU) that was not designed for the particular make and model number of computer concerned WITHOUT checking that the voltage and power output is correct.
Just because a charger/PSU physically fits into the power jack of your computer doesn't mean its always the right one for the job….

An excess voltage can damage severely the computer, and can also be potentially dangerous ( risk of fire etc) whilst an undervoltage can cause the computer other problems including failure to start up and failure to recharge a discharged battery.

For safety and correct running of the computer without damage, it's necessary to ensure that the votage is absolutely correct (the "tolerance" on this is often very small) and the power output sufficient.

Its a power jack have a problem and try to bring it in the technician for awhile and learn from them what o do specifically with that before replacing it.
