Hello As trivial as this may seem, I cannot turn my Media streaming Off and I think this is contributing to a problem. Win 7 x64 Control panel>Network and internet>Network and sharing center>advanced sharing settings. The laptop is off and I can watch your vides. The desktop is on and I can't. Either way, how can I turn the media sreaming off?? Thank you Peter
not sure i understand you peter, what are you streaming and from where to where? is it from your laptop to your desktop? from your desktop to your laptop? or is it something that's being streamed to you from the internet?
what program are you using to stream the media?

this may give you a better idea of what/how streaming is/works :- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streaming_media

and what problem are you having?

No, the issue is that the desktop says streaming is off as I would like it to be for any reason. The laptop is on and I cannot turn it off like the desktop using the advanced feature above, or any means. Both machines are Win 7x64 and MSIE 9. Booth are Dell.
sorry peter you've lost me.

must be a win7 setting your talking about, because what i understand from what you've said is that your not actually streaming anything.

Peter, I found this, maybe it applies: How do I turn off Media Streaming? - 2nd post in the thread.

Go to Advanced sharing settings and click on Choose media streaming options. Then next to 'Show devices on' select all networks. Remove all devices. You'll be left with 'Media programs on this PC and remote connections…'. Select blocked or block all. That's it!

nice link ztruker, lots of different solutions on it.

think i liked this one best.

To stop once and for all media service, go to:

- Click on "Choose media streaming options…"

- There are 4 links on the bottom, click on "Choose homegroup and sharing options"

- Uncheck "Stream my pictures, music and videos to all devices on my home network"

- Click on "Save changes" and "Ok"

That's it, now the media streaming should read "Media Streaming is off".

LOng story short -streaming is not an issue -I made a mistake. However, I cannot see videos as they buffer a lot. And when my desktop opens the homepage some video does not display but the laptop shows these boxes. Is this Java not installed correctly?

Peter, need more info. What is the home page you refer to?

By boxes, do you mean boxes that have an X in them?

When the homepage opened, sections were not loading. None of the videos would play;they just buffered.
After system retores, reinsatlling java, Acronis etc., my non tech wife said why don't you just call Comcast, the ISP.
I figured if the laptop worked it could not be the router because it was downstream from the desktop so to speak. Sure enough, she is still laughing as a router power cycle and a new signal from the isp has it running perfectly.
Me and my issues!
Sorry for the false alarm but it was disconcerting and took two days of trial and error.
R- btw, how are uou finding the new reg back up to work with? Have you done a restore yet?
I will install it next week now that the dust has settled.
Thank you, all.
