I'm using a Dell Inspiron 530 with 3 GB RAM, Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz. My OS is Vista Home Ultimate SP2.

Several days ago I discovered that all of my printer drivers had "disappeared". My first reaction was to go to the Backup and Restore Center, and restore the system from an earlier restore point. I picked one from several days before, and this seemed to do the trick (i.e. my printer drivers reappeared). I would have gone on about my business, but something was nagging at my memory. I went back to the Backup and Restore Center, and it was then I realized that several of the most recent restore points (dated after the one I used for the system restore - probably just a stroke of luck) were labeled:

"System: TITANUIMRES[0x01001101]"

My primary (paid-for) anti-malware software is "Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security" and I guess the similarity in the names had nearly fooled me. I tried to open up the Trend Micro package (which requires entry of a password to access anything more than the intro console, e.g. I have to enter a password to see the details of system scans, etc.). When I entered the password, it immediately popped up a message saying it had emailed my password to one of my several email addresses, exactly the way it normally DOESN'T do. Uh oh. Something's definitely not right.

I've just run OTL. The contents of "OTL.txt":

What do I need to do next? Thank you in advance for any and all help…
Hi I_Need_Help555,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

I'm not seeing any obvious signs of infection.

As we work through your logs. Please remember to run any tools by Right-clicking on the icon and selecting Run As Administrator….

Let's give this a try:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Tomk - thank you very much for offering to help me! (As the user name I selected suggests, I've come to suspect I need all the "help" I can get, probably in more ways than one). BTW - I thought this topic would give me email notification of new posts; this doesn't seem to be working.

I'm not seeing any obvious signs of infection.

The OTL log I already posted may not be showing any obvious signs, but after all my printer drivers unexpectedly disappeared, and my Trend Micro "Titanium Maximum Security" anti-malware package unexpectedly (and inappropriately) popped up a message informing me that it was emailing the password I use for it to one of my email addresses, I have to believe that something's not working the way it ought to be.

As per your instructions, I downloaded Combofix to my desktop. I thought I'd disabled my anti-malware software (by right clicking and selecting from the menus as had always seemed to work in the past); however, when I started Combofix (by right-clicking and "running as administrator"), it informed me that one of the anti-malware programs, PC Tools Spyware Doctor, was still active. I again right-clicked on Spyware Doctor's icon in the menu tray, this time selecting "ShutDown" as opposed to "Disable Intelliguard" (which was the option I usually use to appropriate effect). In response, Spyware Doctor seemed to do as expected, indicating that it was shutting down its various "services" etc. However, Combofix next flashed a message that reported Spyware Doctor as still working, and said that it (Combofix) would still run, but at "my own risk", with no clear means to stop it at that point. My system seems to be working (at least no better or worse than before) so hopefully I didn't do any serious damage… :smack:

When Combofix started, it also stated that it would be saving the text file of its completed log to a specific location, C:\Combofix, which it did NOT appear to do - I went ahead and just saved that text file to my desktop for now. Combofix also did not reboot my system - however, as it seemed to delete all the icons from my system tray, including the anti-malware programs I wanted to re-start (perhaps in preparation for a reboot that didn't complete? maybe this was related to something about the interaction with Spyware Doctor?), I went ahead and rebooted the system on my own, and then restarted the anti-malware.

The log report produced by Combofix:

  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!
Weird. The email notification function seems to be working, now…

I followed your instructions to run the Eset scan. Unfortunately, although I thought I'd disabled my anti-virus software, a scheduled scan by the Trend Micro software that I'd forgotten about began to run (in "Quick-Scan" mode; it scanned about 179 files before I managed to stop it). The Eset scan still seemed to manage to make it through to completion… as far as I could tell, anyway.

Here's the scan log:

Thanks again…

Now what do I do?
No infection there either. The foxtabs detections are "Possibly unwanted programs". Those are programs that sometimes get bundled with other software. Part of our definition of malware is anything that is installed on your system without your permission. Those programs that got flagged should not be on your computer unless your purposefully put them there. I'm guessing that you installed foxtabpdfconverter on purpose. Either way… they do not represent any infection and could not cause the symptoms that you described.

The gimp detection is also suspect. The only antivirus scanner that is picking up potential adware attached is ESET. I think it's a false positive… but you've probably already installed the program so you don't need the installer routine anyway. We'll remove it just to be safe.

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    C:\Users\Public\Downloads\Program Downloads\Gimp\Gimp_Setup.exe
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Hmmm… more weirdness. The email notification feature worked the last time you posted, but not this morning (when it seems you posted again). No worries, I guess - until this is all resolved, I expect I'll be checking the forum frequently for updates regardless of the email notifications. It would be nice if they could work more consistently, though…

The only antivirus scanner that is picking up potential adware attached is ESET. I think it's a false positive… but you've probably already installed the program so you don't need the installer routine anyway. We'll remove it just to be safe.

Before I go any further, I need to say this. There's no denying that I don't have a great deal of tech expertise of my own (after all, entire books on this subject have been written about what I don't know, right?). And I have no doubt that your own expertise greatly outstrips my own, and probably that of most, if not all, of the people I know in my personal life. I certainly agree that I should generally defer to such expertise. That said, I feel that the following three points need to be restated and emphasized:

1) Something, I know not what, caused all of my printer drivers to suddenly "disappear" one morning. I certainly am not aware of having done anything so far out of the ordinary that I believe I might have caused that phenomenon myself.

2) Something, I know not what, set at least 3 or 4 "restore points" on my computer, each labeled "System: TITANUIMRES[0x01001101]"
(please note the odd spelling of the word "TITANUIMRES") - I know I did not do this and it had not ever happened before. And

3) Something, I know not what, caused my Trend Micro antivirus software to pop up a message stating that it was emailing the password I use to access its most "secure" features to one of my email addresses. Note, this obviously inappropriate behavior is NOT a function this software is even supposed to be able to do and certainly not one I was expecting it to do. Furthermore, I can confirm that something claiming to be from Trend Micro was, in fact, emailed to the address it indicated at exactly the time it said it was emailing my password. I can't confirm that it actually was my password because I deleted both of the emails (there were two of them) without opening them.

Now, I may be no expert. I may not know what caused these odd phenomena. But I think I'm on reasonably firm ground in concluding that… something… at least mischievous if not downright malicious, and absolutely uninvited and unwelcome, is still lurking somewhere in my computer, even if the scans we've run so far haven't managed to detect it. If, at the end of this process, we haven't been able to at least plausibly, and hopefully specifically, identify the causative agent of these unsettling phenomena and apply some appropriate remedial measure, I would be very frustrated and disappointed with that result. From the scans we've run, It may not yet look like anything serious is going on, but I'm still far from reassured by that. I'm trusting you and your colleagues to be able to help me figure this out.

All that said, I followed your latest instructions and ran Combofix with the script you provided. Deleting the Gimp installer was just fine with me. Once again, while Combofix generated a text file after running, it didn't store the text file in the location it indicated as it began to generate the file (C:\Combofix\…) Once again, it didn't reboot at the end of the process (although I rebooted manually, as this was necessary to restart my antivirus software).

I hope that in my frustration I haven't sounded too cranky - believe me, I do appreciate all your effort and know you're trying to help. Thanks!
  • It is fine to question me. You don't know me from Adam and it's your computer we are dealing with. The bottom line is that what you do with your computer is your decision and basically all I can do is give advice, opinions and "steer" you in what I believe to be the right direction.
  • I have no doubt that everything you have said is true. In no way do a disbelieve you.
  • I can only "fix" what I can see. If I can't find and malware… I can't remove it. That doesn't mean that there wasn't something there at some time…. perhaps your onboard security already dealt with it - that is why you have it after all.
  • The "funny" restore points I believe are put there by your anti-virus program. I know very little about that particular program and have never had it on any computer I've owned… however, a restore point with that exact name appears in the logs of every computer with that antivirus installed I've ever read the logs of. It may be only anecdotal… but it sure appears to have been created by your program.
  • I'm not saying that you did… but when you enter your password in your antivirus program, there is a line directly below the box that you put the password in… that if clicked will email you your password. I'm not saying that you did that, but I can tell you that I have accidentally clicked the link beside or under the one I really wanted … maybe severl thousand times. It does happen.

All of that being said… none of those possibilities, nor anything I've been able to find on your computer, will explain the disappearance of your printer drivers. The only time I've seen that happen before - it wasn't caused by malware actually… it was caused by the user running one of those "snake oil" registry cleaners that borked the print spooler and somehow deleted the print drivers. I've also seen, first hand, computers for some unknown reason - "forget" that it has printer drivers. Forget is my only explanation because they are just gone and neither I nor the computer can find them… yet when the computer is rebooter… they magically appear. Weird… but I can't explain.

Anyhow… I understand your frustration… and even your potential disappointment… but I cannot, nor will I guarantee that I will find the root cause us the problem! I also don't believe in BSing you and I try to explain what is going on with your computer to the best of my ability. For example - ComboFix deleted some temp files that appear to be simply dross that is sometimes left as remnants from adware. I could have told you "There you go! That was your problem right there!" and you probably would have believed me. In fact, it is possible that remnants of some trojan caused those temp files… but… I don't believe that to be the case so I told you what I believed to be true. I'd like to qualify that statement though…. If we don't find anything in the next scan I'm going to ask you to do, and if you don't notice any more weirdness with your computer, then I'm going to believe that whatever caused your problem was contained in those temp files or your onboard antivirus already took care of it. Malware removal is a mixture of an art and science. Some infections leave a signature that we can see. We then kill it and get on with our life. Some infections leave no signature but are identifiable by the symptoms it causes. Same results. Some infections are partially removed by onboard security, and then perhaps partially removed by tools we use. There just might not be enough symptoms by the time someone posts on the forums to identify what happened… but no one loses to much sleep over it because the computer is behaving. And then there are lots of cases where someone posts that "things just don't seem the same as they used to be". Sometimes we find spyware, etc., but often the computer is just tired and bogged down with a myriad of downloaded garbage. Every problem with a computer is not caused by malware.

OK… that was rather long winded by I suspect you get the gist of what I'm trying to say.

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it

Click the "Scan" button to start scan

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

Tomk -

Please accept my apology. I reread my previous post and realize it sounded much harsher than I can assure you I'd really intended. I've had a lot of stress from other sources as well lately, and shouldn't have posted when I was tired. I also feel bad that I may, in effect, have been wasting time you could have spent helping others more in need of your capable assistance :notworthy: given that it now seems likely my suspicion and alarm about the condition of my computer were merely the result of an unfortunate coincidence of odd but ultimately innocent quirks. In particular, I suppose I'm reassured by your observation about those restore points. I'd never noticed them before seeing that odd behavior with the printer drivers (and I still think it's darned odd that the name of the program would be mis-spelled in creating the restore points, but I suppose far stranger things have happened).

As for the antivirus program emailing the password: I must confess to being HUGELY embarrassed. Having never (yet) "forgotten" the password(s) I've used for that program, I never had occasion to click (at least, not deliberately) on the link labeled "Forgot your password?". I can honestly say that I'd reached the point of being at most barely even aware that link was there. The fact is, given the weird (and incredibly annoying) tendency I've long noticed in my OS for the focus of the mouse to shift at odd and unpredictable intervals (i.e. what the cursor is pointing to, and what the mouse is actually "pointing" to are occasionally two different things) I'm more amazed that this accident hadn't already happened long ago. :smack:

Well, now feeling suitably foolish and appropriately chastened, here are the contents of the aswMBR log file:

I suspect we're pretty close to the "finish line" at this point… what should I do next (perhaps a brave question given what you probably would like to suggest after reading my previous post)? :whistling:
I_Need_Help555,

I accept your apology… but as far as I'm concerned, it's not really necessary. You were not rude, I was not offended. I did not intend to chasten you. You expressed what you were feeling - frustrated with a heavy dose of concern and maybe just a tinge of fear. Those are normal emotions and there is absolutely nothing wrong with expressing your feelings. Trust me… I get frustrated when someone comes here for help because their system is acting weird… and I cannot identify the problem - or worse… I can see the infection (or at least obvious results) and am unable to to find the "key" to removing it. A little about me. In "real-life" I'm a contractor and a farmer. By training, I'm an engineer. If you happen to know any contractors, farmers, or engineers in your personal life… you will understand that what we are at the core of our very being… problem solvers. We don't tend to be very creative "artistically", but we get fairly creative at "thinking outside the box" and solving problems. It's what drives us. When we fail to solve a problem, we take it personally. The vast majority of helpers at forums like WTT volunteer their time strictly because they enjoy helping others. For me, that's a bonus… but I do it because I enjoy the "hunt" of malware, and the challenge of "solving the problem". I'm a little selfish that way. My brother plays chess… I do this. For the most part… doing this relaxes me and gives my mind something to focus on. It's my therapy to escape from real life. :P

You are correct. We are going to wind this down. I am not finding anything currently active on your computer. That doesn't mean there never was a problem… it just indicates that whatever the problem was… it has been resolved. That's a good thing. Keep in mind that even when this thread has been closed - we are still here. If you think your system is acting "strange" again, come back and have things looked at. In fact, it something comes up in the next few days, PM me and I'll reopen the thread.

Let's do some housekeeping:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

  • Double click on OTL to run it.
  • Click on CleanUp!
  • When done, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

That should take care of most of the tools we put on your system. If something stays on your desktop… just go ahead and delete it.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Tomk -

Thanks again for everything. I followed your latest instructions; ComboFix and OTL appear to have been uninstalled successfully. Are there any special procedures I should follow to uninstall the aswMBR, or should I just use the Windows uninstall process? Or, is there any particular advantage I should expect by leaving it on my system?
It really won't hurt anything to leave it on your system… but like most of the tools we use it is updated frequently as malware that it targets changes. Therefore it is unlikely there will be any benefit to keeping it. It also can be a little "dangerous" to just keep it as running one of it's fix routines when not needed… can have detrimental results. It is not "installed". We just ran it. Therefore you just need to drag it to the recycle bin to get rid of it.
Tomk - From your signature, I suspect you may not see this post until tomorrow. No matter - I just wanted to thank you once more for all your assistance, and let you know that you may now consider this thread closed.
I_Need_Help555, Yeah. I'm a little bit flaky when real life interferes. The summer range for our cattle is 4 hours away from home and several hours away from internet access. I spend quite a few weekends there. I hauled about half the cows and calves up there on Saturday so that time of year is at hand. You are very welcome. Remember that if something weird manifests itself again… to be shy in coming back and having us take a look. Good luck and be well.
