As part of a "no keyboard detected" troubleshoot, I replaced my CMOS battery on my desktop computer. Since then, I have a number of issues.
1) My date & time had to be manually adjusted.
2) No System restore points are available.
3) No connectivity through my cable modem. Modem speed 12.0 mbps. Tried "Repair Connection", but could not renew IP address. Can connect thru router on laptop no problem.
4) My antivirus software is gone (AVG).
My OS is XP SP3. Mainboard is manufactured by MSI, model # MS-6743. 2.5Ghz Intel processor.
Any assistance you could provide is appreciated.

Are you saying you have to reset your date and time every time you reboot? Or just once? Just once is to be expected since pulling the battery will reset the CMOS. Your other 3 issues would have nothing to do with the CMOS battery.
Why did you replace the battery in the first place? Did you unplug the computer from the wall BEFORE removing and replacing the battery? Did you take the necessary ESD precautions BEFORE reaching in?
I replaced the battery because I'd read in a forum thread that it may be a reason the keyboard was not being detected at startup. Anyway, the computer was unplugged & I believe I took the necessary ESD precautions. I'm wondering if there may be another explanation besides messing with the battery behind my problems. Any sugggestions?
I am still not sure what the symptoms are. I ask again, do you have to reset the date and time every time you reboot? Is your keyboard detected now? Does the computer boot fine otherwise?
Upon reboot, I received the following message:
"Windows could not start because the following file was missing or corrupt: \system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please reinstall a copy of the above file."
I rebooted again, successfully this time, and the time and date were current. Still no internet connectivity, very sluggish performance, and my hard drive made noise (as if it was spinning & reading in search of something) for several minutes after the desktop appeared.
Rebooting a third time, computer froze at "windows is shutting down". Tried a hard reboot from the power button (twice), & now I'm get this message:
"Windows could not start because the following file was missing or corrupt: \system32\hal.dll
Please reinstall a copy of the above file."
Nothing happens after that.
Help!
Forgot to mention, I did replace the keyboard. It was detected & working properly until I got to where I am now with Windows not starting at all. Also confirmed battery is inserted right-side-up.
