I have several systems that have had issues with slowness that started last week.

The systems will have short periods of 5-10 seconds where they respond normally but return to slow responsiveness for 2-5 minutes and then cycle again.

I ran Superantispyware, which caught a Vundo file in the windows system32 folder, but no reg entries referencing it. It also found 101 of the typical tracking cookies.

Endpoint Security (an enterprise Panda varient) caught nothing

Avast finds nothing

Malewarebytes found nothing

I ran procman and am seeing a ton of Buffer Overflows
Date & Time: 12/1/2011 3:08:25 AM
Event Class: Registry
Operation: RegQueryValue
Result: BUFFER OVERFLOW
Path: HKLM\SECURITY\Policy\SecDesc\(Default)
TID: 584
Duration: 0.0000075
Length: 12

I did a search on this and got some indicators that this could be Vundo related as well. I am working on this system remotely just so we are on the same page.

Here is the Hijack this log:

Hi and Welcome!! :) My name is Jeff. I would be more than happy to take a look at your malware results logs and help you with solving any malware problems you might have. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and know that I am working hard to get you a clean and functional system back in your hands. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • Please subscribe to this topic, if you haven't already. You can subscribe by clicking the Watch Topic button to the right of your topic title and then choosing the notification method ( Recommended: Inmediate Notification)
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

IMPORTANT NOTE : Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.
DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision.
Doing so could make your system inoperable and could require a full reinstall of your OS losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
These tools MUST be run from the executable (.exe) every time you run them
with Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

I apologize for the delay in response. As you can see we are very busy here. Does this by chance happen to be a company/business computer?

I noticed that you ran ComboFix? Were you told at another forum to run that or did you do it on your own? If you did do it on your own, I would ask that you not do that until instructed to do so again as it could render your system unbootable if used incorrectly.

Please download DDS from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
———-

Please download aswMBR to your desktop.

  • Double click the aswMBR icon to run it.
Vista and Windows 7 users right click the icon and choose "Run as administrator".
  • Click the Scan button to start scan.
  • When it finishes, press the save log button, save the logfile to your desktop and post its contents in your next reply.

Hi BuddaManX,

As per our Terms of Use:

We offer free computer help and tech support for home and personal use. We are not here to support others that work for profit, or to support/replace your company's IT department.

  • There may be restrictions and modifications installed on such machines that could be damaged or altered by the actions we take to remove Malware.
  • Any infection could jump terminals in a computer network.
  • There may also be legal issues regarding any loss of business data that I do not wish to deal with.
  • Some people who come here use their computers for work, and the computers may contain the patient records of a physician or the financial records of an accountant's clients or credit card and bank account information of their employer's customers.
  • There may be tremendous risks and legal liability for such users for not fully securing the computer. We will not know this unless we ask. We do not want to be accidentally putting those we help in vulnerable positions for law suits.
  • Business factors outweigh technical factors in making the reformat and reinstall decision. Sometimes friends give missing CDs or lack of expertise as a reason for not doing a reformat and reinstall.
  • The cost of replacing missing Windows XP and MS Office CDs and getting an Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer to come in for 3 hours to do the reinstall and apply all the critical updates, is trivial compared with the potential cost of a multi-million dollar lawsuit for breach of trust if confidential client or patient information is disclosed.

I think that it would be in the best interest of you and any of your clients that you have this taken to your IT department. I appreciate the understanding. :)
I appreciate your position. I am part of the IT department, so the buck stops here. We have had 4 technicians looking at these issues and between us we have 70+ years of tech support experience and none of us have seen this. We have between a 12 - 18 PCs that have slowed to a crawl with no appearant reason for it. It feels like an infection but there are no normal indicators. Everything we have scanned with has come back clean, and believe me that we have run almost everything under the sun, including Avast!, Panda, Housecall, Adaware, Spybot, SuperAntispyware, bit defender and over a dozen other scan products. We are at a loss at this point becasue we do not know and cannot tell where the infection (if it is one) is coming from or how it is spreading. Any hints would be tremendously appreciated. If you can recommend a class or course that covers these things that would be appreciated as well
Hi BuddaManX, I am glad you understand our position here. Seeing as how this is a computer used for business, the best and most responsible action would be to format the system and reinstall using the backup image that I am sure you have. Business computers will have confidential information about both the company and its clients that I am sure you do not want compromised.
