[Resolved] Request Help with W32.TRATS, Vundo, possibly Others

I've just returned from a 3-week trip to discover Mr. Norton proudly announcing at every startup that he has blocked W32.TRATS, and on intermittent startups that Vundo has been blocked. After researching some of the symptoms of these nuisances, I have located at least one .exe file that was rewritten while the original was renamed with a space in front of the ".exe" It turns out that while I was gone, my nephew downloaded and executed some files that may be responsible.

I would really appreciate some help getting things back to normal.

I have run both ATF-Cleaner and CCleaner before rebooting and producing the following HiJackThis log:

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

My name is Simon V., and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Step 1

Open CCleaner. In the Left Pane, click Tools.

Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
In the lower right, click Save to Text File.
Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
You can leave the filename as install.txt.
Click Save, then exit Ccleaner.

Step 2

Post the log from ComboFix (C:\Combofix.txt) when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log and the CCleaner Uninstall List.

Step 1

Click on Start, then Control Panel. Double click on Add or Remove Programs.

Please remove the following program(s):

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_08

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4.

Step 2

Open Notepad (Go to Start > Run, type Notepad and hit Enter), and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

In the File Name box, copy/paste CFScript.txt (Note: Do not change the filename!)

Click Save (Save the CFScript in the same location as Combofix.exe)

Close any open windows.

Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
It will create a log. Be sure to save it to a convenient location.

Step 3

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

Thank you, Simon. After completing your most recent instructions the computer is running much better now.

- No more popups while browsing.
- One new symptom is that the "My Computer" window opens up every time the computer is rebooted.
- After completing the all the steps, Norton reported blocking Trojan.Metajuan, Trojan.Vundo and W32.Trats!inf one more time, but has not reported anything since rebooting.

Congratulations, your log looks clean. Please advise of any problems you are still experiencing, or follow these simple steps to keep your computer clean in the future:

Click Start then Run….

Type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. (Note: The space between the x and the /u needs to be there)

This will uninstall Combofix.

Make your Internet Explorer More Secure

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab.
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install WinPatrol - An excellent startup manager, notifies you if programs are added to startup, allows delayed startup, … A must have! An installation guide can be found here: http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. A tutorial on installing and using this product can be found here (do not install TeaTimer): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A tutorial can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html

Install IE-Spyad - IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. Update All Your Security Programs Regularly - Make sure you update all your security programs (Anti-Virus, Firewall, Anti-Spyware) regularly (once a weak, at least). Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
