I am stumped on this, got a HP Pavilion a1517x, When I plug in the power cord the pc comes on, No display, no beeps, nothing, just the case fan runs, CPU fan Runs and thats it. Tried a new PS and same thing results, unhooked everything and same thing, Tried differant ram same results, on top of this when the system is powered up I hold the power button in and it does not shut off unless you unplug the cord. Tried a differant switch and same results, even with the cmos battery out and I still get the same thing. I am getting a sinking feeling the problem is in the motherboard. Any Ideas what could be causing this? Jimmy
Has it got inbuilt video? If not, the card might be the problem. If it has, it sounds like the motherboard if you have tried different RAM and PSU. Cheers, Lee

My bad yes it has built in video also, and see above quote of the rest.
ie. connect a speaker to the motherboard if there's not one connected and see what if any beeb codes you get. must admit tho sounds like cpu or motherboard kaput.

Humm did not think of the speaker thing, will do and see what happens.

or cpu maybe both, no way to know for sure unless you can check the cpu in another known working board, can't remember if a motherboard beebs for cpu problems but yes i'd think more than likely motherboard kaput. one question that just occurred to me, when you connected a speaker to the motherboard, you did connect a motherboard speaker to the pins on the motherboard itself and not plug a speaker into the speaker jack on the rear of the motherboard?

It was the pins on the board, it was worth a shot and like I said i would have never thought of that. This is a first time I have ever encounter a board that would power up when plugging in the cord without pressing the power switch. so it must be in the circuit pathways or something of the sort to power the fans and lights.

This is why I went with a new PS and even tried a used PS and even tested new ram and old ram, was a first for me.

So I guess we can call this thing dead.

didn't notice the power on soon as power connected.(sounds like a short somewhere)

try removing the power button and reset button(if it has one) wires from the motherboard and see if it still auto powers on, might be a stuck switch causing problems, if it doesn't auto start now then try another switch or very very carefully short the power on pins and see if it boots.

if you work on a lot of pc's jimbo it might be worth investing in diagnostics card like these :- http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ppc+boot+…302&bih=927

Un-did the power switch and same results, even tried a new switch to be sure, and same thing still powers up when plugging in the cord. Which tester do you use or is the best one to buy?

Jimbo1
i don't use one jimbo, all they do is read any boot error codes and point you in a direction to test. i don't work on enough pc's that i need one to save some time. try taking it out of the case, see if it still starts up, if it does then i'm out of ideas on what may be causing the short, except the motherboard itself, and it's kaput.
Thanks Terry for the help and input, going to buy one of those, Building another pc for this one, better that trying to see if I or could have fixed it, but as you said got a nagging feeling the mb is gone. Jimbo1
