I am working on a laptop (not this one) with Windows XP and it has a virus I can't identify. Unfortunately, it doesn't have hijackthis installed, so I can't post any logs. It does have Spybot Search and Destroy so I started that. It gets about 1/4 of the way through, and after many of the following pop ups I'm about to quote, it eventually goes to a blank screen and a reboot is necessary.
It has erased add admin tools and icons, start menu says "empty", going to last good known config doesn't help, safe mode with restore to previous mode doesn't work (when you click next it just sits there and doesn't go to next screen).
Here are the errors I am getting in pop up windows at various times while trying to see what I can fix:
Critcial Error - RAM memory usage is cricially high. RAM memory failure.
Critical Error - Windows can't find hard disk space. Hard drive error.
Hard Drive Failure - The system has detected a problem with one or more installed IDE/SATA hard disks. It is recommended you restart the system.
Windows - Delayed Write File - Windows was unable to save all of the data for the file \\system32\\496A8300. The data has been lost. This error may be causing a failure in computer hardware.
So, can you help me to figure out what this is and how to fix it?

Is this your laptop and what do you mean by “working” on it?
Also, please explain whether or not you can access the Internet on the infected computer or have a flash drive and access to an uninfected computer with Internet access.
Meanwhile, please note that it is VERY important that you do not run a temporary file cleaner on this infected computer
