I'm posting this message from my Kindle. While using Acer netbook, simultaneously downloading windows updates, suddenly had dozens of windows open up saying I had a hard drive problem and I needed to scan my computer. I immediately tried to open Task Manager so I could close those windows, but Task Manager didn't work. I pushed the power button to shut down my computer and restarted in safe mode, hoping to run hijackthis. In safe mode I couldn't see hijackthis. I ran Malwarebytes and Avira, no viruses. I checked Add/Remove Programs for new, strange programs, didn't see any. Went to Internet Options and deleted everything except history and an Apple program my kid uses. Checked Add-Ons and disabled everything except Apple or Google stuff my kid might need for school. Rebooted and the dozens of windows about hard drive and ram immediately popped up. Task.Manager, Control Panel all appear briefly and then disappear. Tried logging off, screen appears briefly and disappears. I powered the computer down by pushing power button. Please help. Thanks.
Oops. Forgot to mention that when I rebooted, I chose my username instead of administrator and there was an Icon on the left and right side of the lower tray. It had a windows symbol ans said System Scan. When I clicked Programs, the only program that showed up was System Scan

Hi there. I don't seem to have notepad anymore. I started in safe networking as administrator and I saw the explorer icon on the desktop, but I thought I should make sure I had notebook before I went any further. I clicked on start, programs and there were no programs listed. I clicked on control panel, search, c drive, program files, and there are no programs listed. I logged off and switched to my regular user name and the only program is System Check and Uninstall System Check. Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but is there another way to find notepad? Also, on my user desktop there is no Internet explorer. I switched back to administrator and the explorer icon is back. The only other icon shown is My Bluetooth Places. Not sure if that was ever there before, but I don't use Bluetooth and I'm pretty sure it's disabled. Should I still try to download those programs? I don't want to copy any logs from this computer to any other computers, so I don't know how I would post the logs.
I just downloaded roguekiller and tried to run it, but got an error message saying it is not a valid win 32 application. It won't run. Also, when I started explorer, it's acting like a brand new installation.
This infection has hidden all your startup programs.

Important: Do not run any programs other than those requested or you may lose your files/folders and not be able to get them back.

Run ExeHelper

Please download exeHelper by Raktor to your desktop.
  • double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix
  • a black window should pop up; press any key to close it once the fix is completed.
Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)

=============================================

Run Unhide

Download Unhide.exe

Once the program has been downloaded, double-click on the Unhide.exe icon on your desktop and allow the program to run. This program will remove the +H, or hidden, attribute from all the files on your hard drives. If there are any files that were purposely hidden by you, you will need to hide them again after this tool is run.

When you have done those steps, try following the previous instructions.

Thanks

Satchfan
OK, here is the exeHelper log: exeHelper by Raktor Build 20100414 Run at 20:41:28 on 03/18/12 Now searching… Checking for numerical processes… Checking for sysguard processes… Checking for bad processes… Checking for bad files… Checking for bad registry entries… Resetting filetype association for .exe Resetting filetype association for .com Resetting userinit and shell values… Resetting policies… –Finished– The Unhide log on my desktop is identical to the exeHelper log. But the black window that popped up after Unhide was finished (which I can't copy) said NoRun policy was found and deleted, NoActiveDesktopChanges policy was found and deleted, NoSetActiveDesktop policy was found and deleted, and HideIcon policy was found and delted. I'm going to try to run RogueKiller now.
I tried running RogueKiller and got the same message: c::\document and settings\administrator\roguekiller.exe is not a valid Win32 application.
Let’s try another program that might allow you to run OTL.

Download/run Rkill:

Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:

Link One
Link Two
Link Three
Link Four

  • Double click on Rkill.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.
Note: If you get an alert that Rkill is infected, ignore it. The alert is a fake warning given by the rogue software which attempts to terminate tools that try to remove it. If you see such a warning, leave the warning on the screen and then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this sometimes allows you to bypass the malware's attempt to protect itself so that Rkill can perform its routine.

You may have to make repeated attempts to use Rkill several times before it will run as some malware variants try to block it.

You'll be able to tell when rkill has done its job when your desktop (explorer.exe) cycles off and then on again.

Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.

When you’ve run that, without rebooting, try running OTL as per my previous instructions

Also, please let me know if you can now see your programs in the start menu?

Satchfan
Yes, I can see my start menu programs and desktop icons now. I had to work late last night so couldn't work on this fix. I will try to do it tonight. Thanks for your help.
OK, here is the rkill log: This log file is located at C:\rkill.log. Please post this only if requested to by the person helping you. Otherwise you can close this log when you wish. Rkill was run on 03/20/2012 at 21:45:16. Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Processes terminated by Rkill or while it was running: Rkill completed on 03/20/2012 at 21:45:21. I am now going to try OTL, but per your instructions, all windows need to be closed, so I'm going to close this window.
