While touring the sites on a double-decker bus - the tour guide, while on the upper deck, remarked that the number of tourists on that deck was 40% of the number of tourists on the lower deck. This also happened to be twice the square root of the number of tourists on the lower deck. How many people were on the bus?

Oh hang on, no I dont agree. On the bus there are 35 tourists BUT theres also the tour guide AND the driver. So that would make 37 people on teh bus altogether.

The Tour Guide did specify that it was "Tourists" and not "people", so rshaffer4444 is correct.

Yes... but the question was not how many tourists were on the bus... it was how many people.

Well done chrissy72. :notworthy:

There were 35 tourists, the bus driver, and the tour guide for a total of 37 people on the bus.

Seeing as how that went so fast... and it is a holiday for some of us... let's do another match stick problem.

Posted Image

The challenge here is to remove the fewest number of match sticks to get the smallest answer. To achieve this... we will multiply your result by a factor of ten for each matchstick removed.

Ready..... Go!

well done chrissy on the first one. not sure i understand 2nd tomk, but if it says 1000M(iles) and you remove the first match leaving 000M(iles) then multiply it by 10(becuase i removed 1 match) the answer is still 000M(iles) or zero, nothing, nada. shrugs. don't think you can get a smaller answer than nothing. :D

Sorry.... I thought of that - but forgot to put it in the criteria. You need to have a positive answer so it needs to be greater than Zero. You also cannot break pieces off of a match to make a decimal point. ;)

Nope... you can only remove whichever ones you think are appropriate - the complete matchstick.

Ok I know this isnt going to be right, but I will get the ball rolling lol. If you take away the first matchstick and the last three matchsticks you come up with the answer of 1 (0001) I have removed 4 matchsticks so that multiplied by 10 would be 40. 40 multiplied by 1 (0001) equals 40.

Remove the second match from the end. Then, flip it over to get the mirror image, you have 1/1001.

Ive seen another answer but I kinda feel like Im stealing from rshaffer's general idea again so if its right, the cookie shall be shared evenly lol. If we also take the next matchstick away from his example we get 1/001 which equals 1 We have only removed 2 matchsticks so 20 times by 1 equals 20.
