Hello WhatTheTech Staff,
I recently ran aground to a problem with my laptop. (It's a Dell - Vista)
Foremost, I must say that the first thing I noticed and tried to fix was my laptop reboot.
- Every time I closed the lid of my laptop, it would reboot itself. Restart and come back to login screen.
I read about this online, most said it was due to battery problems. But I dont think that's the case.
This one guy said it was a hardware problem - the motherboard. So he suggested people upgrade their drivers and BIOS.
As a result, I updated all or most of my drivers and BIOS to most recent version.
However, the problem has not gone away. I actually think it got much worse.
The fan is running louder than usual now. I feel like my laptop is overheating faster.
I checked Task Manager and noticed 16 of them - SVCHOST.EXE is that unusual?
Before I think my Windows was having problems. My Firefox was also not updating - it was keep saying "Connecting to Server" forever.
Do I need to reformat or should I just system restore it? And should I roll back the BIOS also?
Thanks for the concern and help!!
Hello RE-Ignite,
Sorry to hear about your problems,
Have you ever cleaned the laptop out since you got it?
How long have you had these problems?
Cheers,
Thanks for the response, Nahumi!
Response to your questions:
Nope. How do I clean out the laptop?
Am I supposed to use an air can? after splitting it open?
Hmmm… right now, it's really quiet. It may be back to normal. I'll have to keep watch
Notebooks, by their very nature of being powerful computers jammed into a tiny box with restricted air flow, are notorious for having heat issues and for being impossible for most "normal users" to thoroughly clean the interiors of heat trapping dust and dirt.
If you are comfortable splitting open the case and cleaning the interior, then I would say go for it - every few months. If that is something you are not very comfortable with, and since notebook makers DON'T make that easy, no shame in not feeling comfortable with that, then you can take it to a shop for professional cleaning.
In the meantime, remove every cover, slide in card or device and open every cavity and, with can of compressed dusting gas, carefully blast out what ever dust you can. Be careful not to spin fans with the compressed dusting gas as you can spin it faster than designed and ruin the bearings.
Finally, consider using a Notebook Cooling Pad w/ext. power supply. I prefer those with their own external power supplies so you don’t put more strain on the notebook, causing it to generate even more heat.
Yep, not much more that I can add to Digerati's advice.
If you don't have a can of suppressed air something like a foot pump (for air mattresses) will do. If you want to clean the fans, a rub with a Q-Tip (Cotton Bud) will take off most of the compacted dust.
Let us know how it goes,
Cheers,
It doesn't seem to to be the problem with the fan.
(Although I have not used your physical method of blowing it with an air can)
I get these pop-ups from Windows saying - there were some problems and wants me to update it.
I checked what it was - there were problems with Host Process for Windows Services.
Im guessing theres something wrong with my softwares and/or services.
Here's a Taskservlist:

I don't know how to decipher these. Do you know where I can learn these things? hahaha
I'm especially interested in learning about fixing error events that come out on the Event Monitor.
- I look them upon the Microsoft site, but it does not seem to fix the problem. I think there's some other obstacles hindering my path.
Lol the "Problem Reports and Solution" pop-up came up again just momentarily with a whole list of history of just Host Process for Windows Services.
There's an optional update, which I thought was optional.
- Just to make sure I am downloading and installing it.
So I will do all that I can
