Hello Ax. By reading your previous responses to other users, it's clear that you're pretty knowledgeable and that you know what you're talking about.
I'd really appreciate some help with some computer trouble that I've been recently dealing with.

After a few minutes of computer use (time varies between 1-30 min), my laptop will turn off without warning. I've looked at the Event Viewer under Administrative tools, and several lines read the same error:

Type: Warning
Source: PlugPlayManager
Category: None
Event: 262
User: N/A
Computer: Acer-A

I've read that the event 262 is referring to an attempted shut down. However, I'm not quite sure what specifically is causing this shut down, and how I can prevent it/repair the system.

I would appreciate any advice you have to offer, and I do look forward to hearing from you.

Split from here: Random restarts. Thread was over 4 years old. This should give better visibility to the problem.

Hiya TheShepherd,

Sorry to hear your having problems, if you are in need of help it would be best to remain in here this topic verse posting in another topic, the problems in that topic may not pertain to your problem. Many Tech's here are working with others or some may not have seen this problem before.

Help us help you. We still need some additional information in order to best know how to help you.
  • Please indicate Which Laptop, Brand and Model you have.
  • How Much Memory you have.
  • What Current Operating system you have? And what is the current Version SP1, SP2 or SP3 ?
  • Any new "stuff" added? Software or hardware upgrades, before this problem started.
  • What was running on the machine when the problems appeared?
  • Have you tried reverting back to a Restore point to see if this may have fixed the problem?

Also by looking into what you have described of doing a google comes up with this info:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/e…r&LCID=1033 and this

http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid…ger&phase=1

As best and I can gather the system is trying to go into a power saving mode, this may be due to your settings in the control panel under Power Options and could be causing the problems. So it may be best to look at the settings and check the time setting on Battery Power and AC Power and see if this is anywhere close to the random shut down times of your system. If it looks like it may be, then try changing the time settings to a lower time and if the system shuts down due to the changes made. Then you narrowed down where the problems are coming from.

Look into that first and report back here.

Because of random shut downs could also be due to these items:
  • Make sure that anti-virus and anti-spyware utilities are running and up-to-date.
  • Make sure that the operating system and all device drivers are as up-to-date as possible.
  • Run a memory diagnostic such as Memtest86 or Windows memory Diagnostic. http://www.memtest86.com/
  • Run a hard disk diagnostic such as SpinRite tool.
  • Run a motherboard temperature monitoring tool such as Motherboard Monitor - it's a free tool that will report your CPU's temperature among other things, and will let you see if the machine is overheating for some reason. http://majorgeeks.com/Motherboard_Monitor_d311.html
