currently in the process of cleaning up my wifes laptop over in the malware and virus removal thread. i was sent here because there is a problem with the wireless connection. windows is not finding the router or any other network. connection status says the dependency service or group has failed to start.
Edit by paws here's the link to the malware thread for info: http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?sh…mp;#entry726209 Note Ken who is cleaning the infected machine has agreed that responses may be made in this topic here to get the Internet connection up and running.
Hi
1 Are you able to connect to the Internet by plugging in an Ethernet cable twix your computer and router?
2 Have you already tried using a System Restore Point created before the problem started?…….NOTE if you use a System Restore Point created before the Internet connection failed ..it may or may not fix the connection problem… however if the System Restore Point was created at a time when your computer was already infected, then using it will also most likely reintroduce the infections that Ken has thus far removed.
3 Have you tried to reset your IP/TCP stack?
4 Have you tried running the System File Checker (sfc /scannow)
5 Do you have your Microsoft Vista operating system installation disc handy?
6 Have you disabled anything using msconfig?
7 Have you backed up (copied/archived) everything that is important to you on this computer, including all your data files, docs, photos, music, drivers, application installation executables, serial codes, product keys, passwords user names etc, and have you made an extra copy on removable media that is kept safe and offsite?
8 Do you have a disc image kept safe on removable media made when your machine was running fast and sweet and with no problems?
Post back with the answers to the above and we will do our best to help.

1. i did try to use an ethernet cable directly from the router, but i had no luck getting it to go online. however, i am not certain that the settings were correct for a wired connection.
2. did not try a system restore before the problem started.
3.did not try to reset the IP/TCP stack.
4.did not run system file checker
5. do not have a vista installation disc handy.
6. have not disabled anything with msconfig
7. i ran erunt at kens request, so i think we have backed up said files. there isnt anything of to much importance on the laptop, so its not to big a concern at this point.
8.no disc image made safe for when computer was running good.
( alot of this is a foreign language to me. if i do need to do any of this stuff, make it easy for me please:)
the connection problem started at the same time the computer started having security issues. the appearance theme changed on its own, and it wouldnt allow me to access the security center to turn on any protection. so i tryed to log on to this site, which was when i discovered it wasnt recognizing the router connection at home, or anywhere else. not only will it not connect, it wont even find the network to connect to.
rebooted, the router is on the network list but it says the settings saved on the computer do not match the requirements of the network. wont allow me to connect.

That means you haven't entered the correct PassPhrase/Password sequence.
Hopefully you wrote down the PassPhrase/Password when the Router was set up?
If not you will have to change the PassPhrase/Password on the Router and then enter that change when each of your wireless connected computers attempts to connect to the network.
Hi electriccrayon,
Glad to see that Rich and Doug got you fixed up and its all working again..
Well done…..
Yep you are right everyone this side of the pond has been pre-occupied with the celebrations for the Royal Wedding….. it seems as though the whole of the UK has shut down for one big long street party!
I 'll rejoin the party now!
