Mirka4 - Need Help

Actually I think I may have cleared the MIRKA4B.exe virus from my computer which appears to be a variation of the Adware.Margo virus. This all started when I made the mistake of using Internet Explorer instead of Mozilla 1.5.

Next time I booted, and used IE, it attempted to install a 2020Search toolbar. The next time I rebooted, my computer was stalled at the Windows blank background color screen with furious disk activity. Eventually I did a Ctrl-Alt-Del and killed a running process called MIRK4B.exe.

As I said I think I have everything under control, but thought it best to run HiJackThis.

I only use IE on the rarest occassion, mostly I use Mozilla1.5. I have an old copy of Netscape 4, that exists only to save my old emails; I never actually use it.

I want to thank you all in advance for your generous time and help. I will be very greatful to anyone who analysis my log, and gives me some pointes.

Thanks again.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Step # 1

Please download and run CWShredder. Make sure that all browser windows are closed with the exception of Cwshredder and choose FIX.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html

REBOOT

Step #2

Please download and run Spybot Search & Destroy & Adaware, both can be found in my signature below. Then follow the instructions in the link below to run.

http://www.tomcoyote.org/scanning.php

REBOOT

Step # 3

Please do an online scan, 2 would be better,

Panda http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/activescan.asp

Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Reboot and post a new HiJackThis log
Thanks, but I'm pretty sure I've already solved the basic problem. I have already run Ad-Aware 6.181, Spybot-Search & Destroy, Norton Anti-Virus (Updated Virus DB twice), and Norton Win Doctor several times, as well as removing several files and directories manualy that were not caught by these programs. I did this mostly by looking at the file dates and finding files and directories with todays (that days) date and time. I also discovered the the MIRKA4 virus is similar to the Adware.Margo virus, found a reference in one of the on-line virus databases and removed several files that it recommened. In addition, I cleared my JAVA cache, cleared my RECYCLE BIN, deleted my Swap file, and cleared all my TEMP directories including TEMPORARY INTERNET files in case any copies of the virus were lingering there. There are a couple of obvious items in the HiJackThis log such as the references to search engines and specifically 2020Search. But overal I think I"m pretty clean. However, I wanted to run it by they eyes of an expert to see if there is anything the typical user wouldn't recognise. I will follow your advice, and run CWShredder which looks like a good program to have. When finished I will re-run Ad-Aware and Spybot as well as a virus scan again. Thansk for the help. Steve
Post a log when you have run Cwshredder to insure that all is removed. Your log shows a coolwebsearch hijack, a clear search hijack, lycos side search hijack and last but not least a 2020Search hijack. These will need to be cleaned up.
I ran CWShredder and it removed 7 infected IE Registry Entries.

Re-ran Norton Anti-Virus with no infection.

Ad-Aware showed no problems.

Below is my latest HighJackThis Log file.

It may not be a problem, but I am concerned about the entries in 02-BHO: section that say "(no file)". Is that anything to worry about? Norton WinDoctor doesn't catch any of them.

Also, O3 - Toolbar: … (no file)

Also, R1 - HKCU … http://www.snapy.net/index2.html

Snapy.net is not a website that I've ever been to or used. Should it be there?

Other than those items nothing stands out to my untrained eye.

Thanks again for taking the time to help me, it is appreciated.

Steve

Thank you again for all your help, it really is greatly appreciated.

I followed you last instructions and used my computer for a couple of day, and everything seems to be working fine.

Here is my latest log.

Note: D:/NETSCAPE/PGHomepg.htm is my correct home page in IE.

Thanks again for all your time and assistance.

Looks good :D

Ok you ready for the lecture :weee:

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spyblaster, Spyguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. In my signature below is also a tutorial on how to harden IE, a good read and very helpful to stop these things in the future. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on.

Safe Surfing. :D
