My computer will not allow me to turn on automatic updates and when I try manual method of going to website it gives me the following error: Error number: 0x80070424. I tried MS Knowledge base and it tells me to find a file named %windir/inf%.

I have searched manual and used windows search and cannot locate this file in the C:\Windows. I also tried looking in services.msc and cannot locate a process named automatic updates as the KB suggested as method two.

Before this I was having an issue that has been solved and can be viewed here

Please help

Hi, I think you have identified the problem here:

but it is asking for "service pack 3 and I have service pack 2

Microsoft are no longer supporting Win XP with old level Service Packs for their updating service…you will need to update to (install) SP3

Ok I downloaded SP3 from Microsoft, found it free. Installed then ran the command line you quoted above. Now everything seems to be working. I did not wait for automatice downloads to start but manually went to the website and downloaded the updates. I could not do that before. So I am pretty sure we are good now.
