Hi all :wavey:
Was Infected with "rootkit" redirect bug and could not connect with "Windows Update Server".
The Security Expert from Spybot S&D cleaned my system and it's running normal
But now windows update starts and downloaded the latest update …
hit install and it went thru it's usual download, then tried to install.
but ALL failed.
disabled spy-ware and tried again "failed"
Tried again as suggested in the help screen and all 32 updates 'Failed" to install :pullhair:
Posted back on S&D and was given this advice:
"What you need to do is post here in the windows forum as we just do malware removal on this one.
All us forums work together so you can link them to this thread so they can see what we have done."

So here we are and hoping we can get this fixed..
Thanks for your time

Hi ArchHR,

This type of problem can become complicated, because MS Updates can use 3 different utilities for installing various types of updates.
Since you mention 32 updates failed to install, the problem may, or may not, involve more than one of the three.
I'll give you a link to the comprehensive Trouble-Shooting procedure as outlined by Microsoft. (see below)

But first lets have a look at Services, because the Malware that you have now successfully removed, may have turned off necessary Services.

In order for Microsoft Updates to function there are 4 Services that must be running Started, type Automatic.
Windows Update
Cryptographic Services
Background Intelligent Transfer Service
Windows Event Log

All Four of those services should be Status - Started, Startup Type - Automatic

If any are not, then double-click on that Service to change Status and StartUp Type, as above.

After completing the above….

Reboot your machine, then use Internet Explorer to navigate to MS Updates.
Let us know how it goes.

If the above does not solve your situation, please move to the next step, which is to go step-by-step through the MS Trouble-Shooting article linked here:

Post back with any progress and/or questions as necessary.

Best Regards
Hi Doug,
Checked Services….

Windows Update <—- Can't find ??
i did find Automatic Updates…. one in the same??? if so <—- was running in auto
Cryptographic Services<—- was running
Background Intelligent Transfer Service <—- was OFF started and in auto now
Windows Event Log ( called Event log) <— was running

Rebooted and tried to install updates
but i noticed something strange ?
I selected all all were checked BUT the download size was( below)

Install Updates
Install Updates Download size (total): 0 KB *
Estimated time at your connection speed: 0 minutes *
(*Downloaded; ready to install)

ran it anyway got the following

Successful: 0
Failed: 32
Remaining: 0

Now they won't even download.. Unless  MS is having server issues tonight.
Any additional advise??
will try in the morning and let you know…
Thanks for you time..

Evening Doug,
followed your advice and spent the afternoon reading and come to find out,
that I was in error in how I reported the failed upload..
When I went to my upload history the error code was "canceled" not "failed"
therefore there was no error code to research.. so back to the support site under the canceled
search and it suggested to try and load it manually.. That worked. for the 1 i tried.

When you said ""it gets a little complicated"" you were not joking got really confused on the best
approached..
One of the suggestions was to be sure all previous updates were installed..
Well I use custom update and select the updates I feel are really needed.. Guess i should not have
done that  and it also suggested to try auto update .. which i do not use also

so i checked all hidden updates and set the auto-updater for the top of the hour..
and like magic everything downloaded and installed…. !!! :woot:

Ran windows update manually and found a few more and they installed..NP
most of what was hidden were .net framework files and some media player updates.

SO my guess they were being canceled because the updates needed the previous update to
update <—- my unprofessional layman's guess ;)

There were all kinds of suggestions but all keyed into an error code and I was not getting any error codes
glad i took the easy way first.

I now and set for auto updates… B)

Hope this helps others..

Thanks for your time

Glad you got it sorted. I am "mildly reluctant" to accept all MS Updates automatically. My settings call for Download, but allow me to review and install. I generally wait until I have read at least one review after Patch Tuesday. I like Windows Secrets news letter which features a monthly review of critical updates and patches just after Patch Tuesday. Best Regards
