My yahoo email account is sending out spam messages to hundreds of ppl that I dont even know with links. I have done bot a macafee and malwarebytes scan and they picvked up nothing but when I did a kapersky scan it picked up this virus Trojan-PSW.HTML.PayPal.a. I dont know if this has anything to do with my external yahoo account. It doesnt seem to have affected my bigpond email which is linked to my windows mail on my computer. I have changed my yahoo password and have done one of the scans that you have suggested of which i have copied and pasted both reports at the end of this post. Thankyou. Hi chrissy72,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Do you know where the infected file was found? Do you still have the Kaspersky log? If so please post or provide the information.

Meanwhile…. I don't think the two are related but let's see what we can find.

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thankyou Tomk for your reply. I have pasted the results of the Kapersky scan below and am working on the other scans now and will post the results soon. I have not recieved anymore failure messages from yahoo since changing my password. Thankyou again for your help. Chrissy. chrissy72, You have an infected email. Unfortunately I cannot tell which one or ones it is. What I need you to do is go through all of your email in your in box, sent box, and any other saved boxes you may have. Please delete any that you don't want/need/recognize. Odds are that the infected email will have an attachment or at least a link. Therefore, do not open any attachments or click on any links. Once you've been through all of the emails, please empty your deleted email box. Because that infection is only showing in the email, you probably (rightfully so) did not trigger the infection by clicking on the included link. I believe that typically this is a phishing attempt and that if you don't respond… you are OK because I believe they ask you to respond with your paypal information. If you give it to them… well… then they have it. :( If you haven't had any unusual activity on your paypal account, you should be fine as far as that infection goes. So… let's see what Mbam finds.
Thankyou Tomk. Yes I have recieved several emails supposidly from paypal in the past but I never pay any attention to any emails asking me to click on links and give my information such as ones from banks etc. I usually delete them straight away, but this one may have still been in my deleted items folder at teh time of the scan. I have completely emptied all my email folders now. I have just completed the Malwarebytes scan and have posted the results below. Thankyou Chrissy Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.46 www.malwarebytes.org Database version: 4825 Windows 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18975 15/10/2010 9:18:39 AM mbam-log-2010-10-15 (09-18-39).txt Scan type: Quick scan Objects scanned: 149145 Time elapsed: 8 minute(s), 38 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: (No malicious items detected) Folders Infected: (No malicious items detected) Files Infected: (No malicious items detected)
chrissy72,

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point:

  • Download SysRestorePoint to your desktop and unzip it to it's own folder.
  • Double click SysRestorePoint.exe so that we can make a new system restore point.
  • A box will pop up after it has made a new point, usually after a few seconds. Close that window and exit the program.
Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

You may be asked to choose drive. Choose C: At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Thankyou so much for all your help Tomk. I have created the new system restore point and changed those settings u pointed out. I am currently reading through all the information on the links u have suggested and taking the suggested steps to clean up and secure my pc. Chrissy
