The Women's Book Club will be hosting discussions of five bestselling authors' new books over the next five weeks, including Rough Country. Each meeting will be held at the home of a different club member, such as Ms. Adams residence; and each meeting will feature a different one of the five books.

Given the following information... can you determine at whose home meetings 1st through 5th will be held, and the novel and author that will be discussed there?

  • The meeting a Julie's house is one week before the meeting at Mrs. Dennis's residence, which is one week before the meeting where author Fern Micheals new novel will be discussed.
  • Family Ties will be discussed by the club one week before the new novel by author John Sandford.
  • One week after Ms. Everson has the meeting at her house, the club will discuss the new novel by Ken Follett.
  • James Pattersons new book will not be discussed at Julie's home.
  • Three consecutive meetings will feature: Ms. Brown will be hostess, then the group will discuss Honeymoon, then Kathy will welcome the members to her home.
  • One week after discussing Game Over, Lisa will be hostess.
  • Discussion of Danielle Steele's new novel is not scheduled to take place at Ms. Collins home.
  • Mary won't be hosting the discussion of The Pillars of Earth.
  • Nancy will host one week before the group discusses James Patterson's new book.
  • Kathy, who is not Ms. Dennis, won't host the discussion of Fern Micheals book.
  • John Sandford's new book, which isn't Honeymoon, is not the book scheduled for discussion at Ms. Browns home.

Nicely done Raktor. :thumbup:

I expected someone to come up with one solution, and then I was going to ask for the second one. However, you got them both first try. Good job!

(Your code may have been inefficient... but it worked. I spent at least an hour solving it. I was just about to get out of bed and find a piece of paper to write on when I finally got the second one. :wacko: )

Yay too late :lol: Tried solving that on paper but it confuses me, coded it and it resulted to 1,680 permutations to start with. No wonder. :lol: @Raktor :notworthy: @Tom, can you split these into different threads like that in MWR?

I feel a bit dodgy about providing this, since it's pretty terrible, but here goes.. :P

<?
function isUnique($array) {
	$count = 0;
	$found = 0;

	for($i=1;$i<=8;$i++) {
		for($j=0;$j<count($array);$j++)
			if($array[$j]==$i)
				$found = 1;
		if($found==1) {
			$count++;
			$found = 0;
		}
	}

	if($count==count($array)) {
		return TRUE;
	} else {
		return FALSE;
	}
}

function multiply($a, $b, $c, $d) {
	$b = $b * 100;
	$c = $c * 10;
 	$b = $b + $c + $d;
	return ($a * $b);
}

function validate($a, $b, $c, $d, $result) {
	if($result>1000) {
		$resultsarray[0] = $a;
		$resultsarray[1] = $b;
		$resultsarray[2] = $c;
		$resultsarray[3] = $d;
		$result = str_split($result);
		$resultsarray[4] = $result[0];
		$resultsarray[5] = $result[1];
		$resultsarray[6] = $result[2];
		$resultsarray[7] = $result[3];

		if(isUnique($resultsarray))
			return TRUE;
	}
}

function multiplyOutput($a, $b, $c, $d) {
	$result = multiply($a, $b, $c, $d);
	if(validate($a, $b, $c, $d, $result))
		echo($a . " x " . $b . $c . $d . " = " . $result . "<br>\n");
}

for ($array[0] = 1; $array[0] < 9; $array[0]++)
	for ($array[1] = 1; $array[1] < 9; $array[1]++)
		for ($array[2] = 1; $array[2] < 9; $array[2]++)
			for ($array[3] = 1; $array[3] < 9; $array[3]++)
				if(isUnique($array))
					multiplyOutput($array[0], $array[1], $array[2], $array[3]);
?>
