Is it virus, hardware or software?

Running Vista on power up, screen is black, Monitor and hardware is working because when I use control/alt/delete, I do get the task manager to come up and visible on screen. then when I key something it goes black again. thanks in advance. Do I have a virus or hardware or software problem?

In Task Manager….can you select New Task? If so, please type in explorer.exe and see if things look back to normal.
