Hello, I get lag Spikes on an online game called Maplestory. My computer used to run it just fine but now it seems to not be working too great at all. I cant do anything without lagging quite badly. Ive reconnected my wires, wiped my computer and reinstalled my drivers, with no luck. Please help =[
Since you posted into Networking Forum, should we believe that you are suspecting modem, router, and network configuration to be the problem?

Does your machine(s) perform briskly on local tasks not requiring internet connectivity?

Tell us more about your internet service, modem, router and network.

and Let's have a look at your machine performance in general…

Please Run the PCPitstop.com OverDrive Full Tests

Here's how:

You must use your Internet Explorer for this procedure. (doesn't work so well in Firefox or others). If your machine is running Vista or Windows 7, you must Select IE to “Run as Administrator”. After completing PCPitstop OverDrive you can close your IE browser and re-open it Normally so that you are no longer running as administrator.

Go to: http://www.pcpitstop.com
Click on "Free Computer Check-up" listed below PC Pitstop OverDrive
In the User Login - Click on "Sign up FREE!"
You'll need to submit a valid email address and create your own password, then click - Create Account(button)

Now enter your email address and password to Log in, Select - Scan this system Now!(button)
You will then be asked to download an ActiveX component and allow it to install.
It is safe and does not compromise your privacy.
Follow the on-screen prompts to install the ActiveX and to allow the Full Tests to be run on your machine.

The Full Tests take about 2 1/2 - 3 minutes on most machines.
When complete, a Results - Summary - Recommended Fixes will be displayed.

Please post the URL internet address, from your Results, back here into this Topic Thread so that we can review the configuration and present performance levels of your machine.

Note: During the graphics 2D and graphics 3D testing, your screen will display some rapidly moving objects.
If you are sensitive to visual flashing, it may cause dizziness. Therefore, look away from the screen during that portion of the testing.

After reviewing the results we will be more informed and may be able to provide better recommendations for you to work towards improving your machine's performance.

While PCPitstop does offer a variety of Paid Products, the PCPitstop OverDrive testing is FREE. Please ignore the references to Paid Products. At WTT we prefer to provide manual solution instructions that you can apply directly to your machine.

Best Regards
Oh and i forgot to mention, Yes it does run rather good without internet. To be honest, the only time it slows down so much is when its with the online game. I've looked around and searched up some things myself on why my computer would slow on the game so i came to the conclusion that it may be a network problem.
If there is something wrong with your internet… I wish the same was wrong with mine! :P

You have a relatively small amount of unnecessary processes running from startup.
Consider Disabling them from MSCONFIG

You have a browser cache flow situation with more mb's of files that settings allowed.
Clear your temps and temporary internet files

You C:\ if 25% fragmented.
While this could be due to your large reserved space for System Restore Points, it could also be general fragmentation.
Reboot into SAFE Mode
Reduce your System Restore Point size to about 1024mb
Run your machines Defrag (while still in SAFE Mode)

You may benefit moderately from Changing your Internet Receive Buffer Size

You may benefit from updating your Graphics Adapter Driver

Utilities that claim to boost performance or RAM, etc…. generally don't
consider uninstalling:
Iobit Game Booster
Pando Media Booster

Toolbars are generally a drag on performance and not necessary unless you are really connected into using their features (not recommended)
Consider uninstall Skype Toolbar

Desktop Themes are often a drag
consider uninstall Zune Desktop Themes (unless they are so super-cool that you think it is outrageous for me to recommend removing)

Consider moving away from the bulky/laggie AVG 9.0 Antivirus
Instead consider Microsoft Security Essentials

By the way…. How much free space do you have on the Hard Drive?
Thank you for the help. I currently have 51.5 GB free space on my hard drive. I am now performing the tasks, such as downloading the windows security, but the downloader said my windows xp is not genuine and i have just discovered i had 30 days left for some type of subscription. I recently wiped my hard drive and used my same key, but now they are saying that it is a trial key. Before this had never happened. What do i do? As for the graphics driver, i went on the Ati site but could not find the Radeon XPRESS 200 series drivers download section. how else would i be able to update my graphic driver?
Hi Amit Khan,

There are many ways by which you may have acquired a machine with a Windows operating system that is not properly activated and does not carry a legitimate product identification key.

Not all of those circumstances are necessarily your "fault", but it does remain your "responsibility" to properly license any software that you receive and use.

Question:

Is there a holographic Certificate of Authenticity with the 25 alphanumeric Product ID Code, attached to your machine as a shiny sticker on the case or near the battery?
Or do you have the retail CD and envelop containing the Certificate of Authenticity?

You can use the online BelarcAdvisor to discover the Product ID Code that has been installed with your Windows XP Pro SP2.
Compare it to the COA sticker.
If it is not the same, you may need to reinstall, using the correct Product ID Code.
Or you may need to purchase a legitimate license from Microsoft.

Take the information you have collected by discovery above, and contact Microsoft Activation

Moving back to your original posted problem of slow performance when connected to the Internet. The utility "Vuze" is installed on your machine. Vuze(4.5) Vuze Inc. 8/23/10 It is a version of the utility Azureas, which is a bit-torrent device widely thought to be corrupt, illegal and a high risk vector for infection. It is also a huge "resource hog" and is the most likely cause of your otherwise excellent machine and internet connection being crippled when connected to the Internet.
Thank you for the response. My computer was bought from a friend, so it does not have a ceritification sticker. im sure this means i just have to go to microsoft and exlplain this and hope for the best. I have checked my processs, in the task manager, and i do not see Vuze's process come up on the list. Is it possible that Vuze is not the problem since i do not see it on the list of processes. I have a somewhat off the topic question. Could the lag come from the server of the game itself? Say for example, the server's data transfer rate decressed due to something that might have happened.
You might find Vuze in Control Panel - Add/Remove If not, I'll research a bit more to determine how to assure that Vuze is completely removed. Note: Having Vuze on a machine may cause Vuze to voluntarily participate as a node/seed in a torrent, whether or not the owner/user of the machine is aware of it. About online games and game servers….. Yes. Depending upon the amount of traffic and the amount of resources set aside for a particular web game server, your experience can be quite satisfying, and/or quite annotying
