Browser's not working - son's computer

I have temporary access to my son's laptop. He is going back to college and I'd like to avoid problems while he is away by cleaning up this PC. It's a bit pre-emptive, but also, he can no longer use MS Explorer - the browser won't work at all - and he said the same thing happened to google chrome - but he uninstalled it. He can use Firefox - but there must be malware on here.
