2 questions.
1. The other battery. Was it used? New ? or from another dead labtop? If so it may be a bad battery.
2. The other battery does it have the same specs as the one that went dead, if not then that could be the problem.

Now not sure about this, but I have seen this myself in my shop, the pin inside the adapter could be broken, which can allow ac power to the lab top but will not allow it to charge the battery.

The battery was new and i opened the pack myself. As far the specs are concerned, it was providing the exact specifications. Yes the battery was giving my laptop the ac power but it was not being charged. please tell me which adapter you are talking about? Is this inside the laptop or the battery itself. What i must check?

1. Then if the battery was the same spec's as the old one it should be working, but not saying this is the case it could be a defective battery. I have seen that happen, only sure way to find out is to find someone who has a labtop like yours to test the battery to see if it will charge.

2. The adapter I am talking about is the Ac one you plug into the labtop, some i seen have a needle like pin in the inside of the plug, with that broken it will not allow the battery to charge up, but it can provide ac power to the labtop to run.

This is a few times that I seen this and I am not saying this may be the case for you, but if possible try the battery if you can in someone else's labtop that has the same spec's as yours to rule out the battery. That would be the starting point.

I have shown it to a friend who knows much about laptops. According to him, the battery is dead and the charger i was using was also defective. Now i have to replace charger and battery both.

Ack, Sorry to hear about that, but glad you were able to find the cause of the problem.
