[Resolved] Laptop has ground to a halt

I gave my mother-in-law ("MiL") a new HP Pavillion dv6 in November. Loaded MS Office and AVG 9.0 anti-virus for her. Neglected to make a recovery disk. :-( She brought it back to me this week, nearly unusable. It takes 20 minutes to boot, 3 minutes to start Firefox, hangs 15 seconds after each mouse click. Strangely, CPU meter in Task Manager shows only 3% CPU usage! Windows Update is broken (fails with codes 8000FFFF, 8007045D) and I get "Publisher Unknown" warnings with Windows Update and with Troubleshooter (msdt.exe). AVG scan turns up nothing, ditto with Malwarebytes. I'm a linux geek, don't get Windows at all, so much appreciate your help. HiJackThis log file is below.
