I did the dreaded MS update yesterday and fought to get the computer back up and running afterwards. I don't know if it's malware/virus issues or just incompatibility problems with OnlineArmor and Avast.

I'm sure there is a bunch of junk in here that could be trimmed I just don't know what.

Here is my HJT log:

Thanks for your time and help!
Hello cabinover and :welcome:

My name is JonTom

  • Malware Logs can sometimes take a lot of time to research and interpret.
  • Please be patient while I try to assist with your problem. If at any time you do not understand what is required, please ask for further explanation.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Read every reply you receive carefully and thoroughly before carrying out the instructions. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive, as in some instances you may have to disconnect your computer from the Internet.
  • PLEASE NOTE: If you do not reply after 3 days your thread will be closed.

Lets take a closer look with the following scans:

  • Please perform the following scan

    • Please download DDS from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
    • Double click on the DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run).
    • When done, DDS.txt will open.
    • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
    • Save both reports to your desktop.
    • Please post the contents of the DDS.txt and Attach.txt logs in your next reply.

  • aswMBR

    • Download aswMBR.exe to your desktop.
    • Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
    • When asked if you want to download Avast's virus definitions please select Yes.
    • Click the "Scan" button to start scan.

    [external image: Posted Image]

    • On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

    [external image: Posted Image]

Please post both DDS logs and the aswMBR log in your next reply.
Hi JonTom, Can't get DDS to download. Upon clicking the link I get an About:Blank address. I've tried going directly to the site with no luck, the computer just sits here doing nothing. I've also tried hand-typing the address in only to get sent back to about:blank. Am running the aswMBR presently. Attempted to run aswMBR but it hangs on C:Document and Settings/owner/.housecall Looking at that particular file it appears to some files marked AU from Trend Micro. I don't remember ever using that but it's possible. I thought it had stopped scanning so I originally saved the log. Then an hour or so later it was still scanning. Hello cabinover

Thank you for the aswMBR log.

Can't get DDS to download. Upon clicking the link I get an About:Blank address

Strange. Do you have all scriptblocking disabled?

Lets try OTL instead:

  • Download and run OTL by Oldtimer

  • Please download OTL by Oldtimer by clicking here and save the file (called OTL.scr) to your desktop.
  • Close all open windows on your computer then Double click on the OTL icon to run the program.
  • Check the boxes beside "LOP Check" and "Purity Check".
  • Under Custom Scan paste this in:

  • Click the "Run Scan" button. Do not change any settings unless specifically told to do so. The scan will not take long.

  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows: OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
  • Note: These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
  • Please Copy and Paste the contents of both files in your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.

Let me know if you encounter any problems :)
I've shut down both my Online Armor and Avast. Went through all of my programs in add/delete program folder and took out spyware blaster as well. Still I am not able to have the computer follow the link to either scan tool. I go to about:blank. I tried manually adding the address for OTL, downloaded the OTL.exe program but it will not run either. I get an error message saying it needs to close. Would a screen print of all my programs help any? I do have Malwarebytes installed, could that be causing my problem here?
Hello cabinover

I do have Malwarebytes installed, could that be causing my problem here?

I do not think so.

Lets proceed as follows:

  • Please RUN HijackThis

    • Click the "Do a System Scan Only" button to produce a log.
    • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items (if they are present):

    O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - (no file)

    • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete the selected items by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Please delete the following folder

    • NOTE: DO NOT double click on ANY executable (.exe) files in the next step!!!
    • Right-click your "Start" button and select "Explore".
    • Navigate to and delete the following files/folders in bold.

    C:\Program Files\somototoolbar <===== delete this folder.

    • Once deleted, Empty your Recycle Bin.

  • MalwareBytes AntiMalware:

    • Double click on your MalwareBytes AntiMalware icon to launch the program.
    • Click on the "Update" tab and then on "Check for Updates".
    • The program will now install the latest Malware definition files.
    • Once complete, click on the "Scanner" tab, select "Perform Quick Scan"and then click on "Scan".
    • Once the program has scanned your computer, a log file will be created in Notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.

    • If the scan detects any Malware-related objects, make sure that everything is checked, and click "Remove Selected" <– Very Important.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer.
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the "Logs" tab.
    • Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart your computer, please do so immediately.
    • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.

Please post the MBAM log in your next reply and let me know how the machine is running now.

Try DDS/OTL again and if they do not run please post a new HJT log.
As requested. Still cannot get computer to go to either DDS/OTL. If I click I get the about:blank tab. If I cut/paste the address I get a tab labeled untitled and white screen. Weird.

The MB found one malicious problem that was taken care of. Here is the newest log followed by the newest HJT log:

Thank you. Computer seems fine but I'll let you know right after I restart.
After rebooting I could not get the Avast to start. I uninstalled and reinstalled several times to no avail. Knowing that I've used AVG for the last several years I went back to them. I cannot use Online Armor with AVG 2012 though so I uninstalled OA, turned on my Windows firewall and installed AVG 2012. So far everything is working and quicker than normal except the links to DDS/OTL and now I have nothing in my Device Manager. Didn't notice until I had no sound and went looking for the sound card. The DM shows up but it's blank. Also, I've noticed that My Computer takes longer searching for stuff. I don't ever remember seeing the flashlight search icon before.
Hello cabinover

Thank you for the logs.

Please do not edit your posts as I do not receive a notification indicating that you have done so.

Still cannot get computer to go to either DDS/OTL

I agree thats a little odd (especially since you had no problems downloading aswMBR).

Your HJT log is looking much better.

So far everything is working and quicker than normal except the links to DDS/OTL

:)

  • Temporary File Cleaner

    • Download TFC to your desktop.
    • Close any open windows.
    • Double click the TFC icon to run the program.
    • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run.
    • Click the Start button to begin the process.
    • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
    • The program should not take long to finish.
    • Once complete it should automatically reboot your machine.
    • If your machine does not reboot automatically, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean.
    • Note: After running TFC your machine may take slightly longer to boot the first time. This is normal.

I uninstalled OA, turned on my Windows firewall and installed AVG 2012

Thanks for letting me know. You will need to uninstall AVG before we run ESET since it can only be disabled for a maximum of 15 minutes.

  • Please run the following scan

    • Note:Internet Explorer is preferred for this scan, although it will run with other browsers.
    • Note for Vista/Windows 7 Users: ESET is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on your Internet Explorer icon and select "Run as Administrator".
    • Please disable your real time security programs before performing the scan.

    • Scan your system with Eset Online Scanner
    • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use.
    • Click the [external image: Posted Image] button.
    • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps).
    • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the [external image: Posted Image] icon on your desktop.

    • Check [external image: Posted Image]
    • Click the [external image: Posted Image] button.
    • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
    • Check [external image: Posted Image]
    • Make sure that the option to "Remove Found Threats" is UN checked.
    • Push the "Start" button.
    • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
    • When the scan completes, push [external image: Posted Image]
    • Push [external image: Posted Image], and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
    • Push the [external image: Posted Image] button.
    • Push [external image: Posted Image]

Once ESET has completed its scan re-install AVG and post the ESET log in your next reply.

I am curious as to why you are having problems getting some of our scans to run.

Try running the following tool and the see if OTL will download and run:

  • exeHelper

    • Please download exeHelper by clicking here and save the file (called exeHelper.com) to your desktop.
    • Double click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up. Press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • Post the contents of log.txt (it Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com).
    • NOTE: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Please post the ESET log in your next reply and let me know how you get on with exeHelper and OTL.
OK my friend, here are the logs you requested. Do you still want the OTL scan? I can probably run it in IE. Thanks JonTom.
Hello cabinover

Thank you for the logs.

As for the DDS scan I can run it. The problem seems to be Google Chrome

Thats the first time ive heard of that….

Lets remove some outdated programs before we continue:

  • Please un-install the following

    • Click on "Start" then on "Control Panel" and then on "Add or remove programs".
    • Click on "remove a program". A list of currently installed programs will be displayed.
    • Find the "Adobe Reader 9.3.4" program, click on it once and then click on the "uninstall" button.
    • If you are prompted to re-boot your computer to complete the uninstall please do so.
    • Repeat for Java™ 6 Update 22.

ESET has detected a number of infected restore points that we will deal with in due course (do not perform a system restore or you will become reinfected). The scan also identified a file that can be removed:

  • Please search for the following file

    • NOTE: DO NOT double click on ANY executable (.exe) files in the next step!!!
    • Right-click your "Start" button and select "Explore".
    • Navigate to and delete the following file in bold.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\Downloads\cnet_jre-6u26-windows-i586_exe.exe <==== delete this file.

    • Once deleted, empty your Recycle Bin.

    Still no Device Manager

Can you provide a little more deatil here please?

When you ran DDS, two logs would have been produced, the attach.txt log which you have already posted and the dds.txt log which I still need to see.

Please post the dds.txt log in your next reply. If you need to run DDS again to obtain the log please do.

Do you still want the OTL scan?

If we can get the dds.txt log then OTL will not be required :)
Tried to remove Adobe reader but get an error message of : This patch could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package. Did get rid of Java update. Got rid of .exe file and emptied recycle bin. As for the Device manager when I try to open it I get a blank white window, nothing in it. I have no sound, my printer will not work as it can't be found. Can't find sound card either nor see any port connections in Device Manager. Didn't see the dds.txt log so I ran it again. DDS.txt: . Hello cabinover

Thank you for the log and extra information.

Your logs show DNS server IP addresses that resolve to San Antonio, Atlanta, and Oldenberg (Germany). Are you familiar with all of these locations? Please let me know.

Tried to remove Adobe reader but get an error message

Lets try Revo:

  • Revo Uninstaller

    • You can dowwnload Revo Uninstaller from here.
    • Information about how to use this program is provided on the download page.

As for the Device manager when I try to open it I get a blank white window, nothing in it. I have no sound, my printer will not work as it can't be found. Can't find sound card either nor see any port connections in Device Manager.

This may have been caused by the malware infection or it may also be an unrelated occurrence.

Lets try the following to see if it helps:

  • System File Checker

    • Click on "Start" and then on "Run".
    • Copy and paste the following text into the Run box that opens:

    sfc /scannow

    • Press Enter.
    • Let the system file checker run unhindered.
    • Note: The program may (or it may not) ask you for your Windows XP installation CD - please insert it at the prompt. If it doesn't ask you for the CD this means that it wasn't necessary to replace any files.
    • You may have to exit the scan should you be notified that an installation disk is required and you do not have one.

Let me know how it goes with Revo and the System File Checker and how things are running now in your next reply.
I have a cousin in San Antonio and lived in Germany as an Army brat but other than that, no, no association with any of those places. Could it be my internet provider, Comcast? I tried the RevoUninstaller and it came back with the same exact response as the Add/Delete Program. BTW, it seems like I've gained another program while downloading Revo. Webroot Secure Anywhere suddenly started scanning my computer after I clicked the Revo download. I stopped it ASAP. I figured if you wanted me to run it you'd have mentioned it. I ran the System File Checker, twice as a matter of fact. I missed the first time it completed so I ran it again. Apparently it found nothing out of the ordinary as it simply disappeared when it was done. Good thing as well, I have no XP install disc. It was in the computer when I bought it. Still no Device Manager, sound, or printer either. I sincerely hope you had a nice weekend and your weather was similar to ours, 70°F and sunny!
Hello cabinover

I sincerely hope you had a nice weekend and your weather was similar to ours, 70°F and sunny!

My weekend was not too bad but the weather, not as good as yours :(

I have a cousin in San Antonio and lived in Germany as an Army brat but other than that, no

That explains the IP addresses :)

Sounds as though it may have come bundled with the download. It can be uninstalled.

Still no Device Manager, sound, or printer either.

Since there does not appear to be any sign of system file damage and your latest DDS log appears to be clean, I'll have to hand you over to our tech team for additional support concerning your Device Manager issues.

Please create a thread in our Microsoft Windows Forum where our tech team will be able to provide excellent assistance.
