Hi, about 2 days ago my PC started bugging out. I have Kaspersky and spysweeper running at all times so I didn't think it was a virus at first. However after ruling out every other possibility that I can think of, including cleaning up my desktop and defraging the drives I am convinced it must be a virus of some kind. I have run all the recommended tools including spybot S&D. All that turned up was a few minor adware things that didn't make a difference after they were deleted. The only other thing I can think of is that I just installed a microsoft security update a few days ago... maybe that did it, I don't know. I'm hoping you guys can help me out, thanks in advance. Here is my hJT log:

I also forgot to add that explorer.exe appears to hog most of the CPU... also taskmanager says its using 30-40% usually. All in all the CPU usage sits between 80-100% at all times. The memory usage seems to be normal.

Hello and welcome to the forums

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, combofix.txt. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

The forum is run by volunteers who donate their time and expertise.

Hi, thanks.... my system seems to be running better, though my cpu usage seems to read between 65% and 85% now even after all that. Task manager and explorer are showing about 30% usage each on average any time I open task manager.

Yep, its legit software... though the last release did have some errors in it. I just downloaded the new version today (errors corrected) which I will be installing. Is it causing a problem?

I'm sure it's alright, I just couldn't find any information on it.

These aren't bad but aren't needed to run at startup
Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
O4 - Startup: WinMySQLadmin.lnk = C:\mysql\bin\winmysqladmin.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

After the above:

You can remove any programs / Tools I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there otherwise just delete them and empty recycle bin.

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Download and install Ad-Aware.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis
just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

Hi, thanks for all your help. My system seems to be running ok now though CPU still reads high. Since doing all this I've had a few errors where memory couldn't be read. Also every time I boot up I get a message saying the system has recovered from a serious error involving the files Mini072007-01.dmp and sysdata.xml . Error signature is as follows: BCCode: 1000000a BCP1: 00000004 BCP2: 0000001C BCP3: 00000000 BCP4: 804FA045 OSVer: 5_1_2600 SP: 2_0 Product 256_1 I hope I haven't done something wrong :-)

Do you have one of these Video card: nvidia, Same for ATI video cards,
radeon graphics card.
If yes, you may not have the latest Video drivers and you just downloaded
the drivers from MS updates, which not recommended to do so. So, try and get
the latest drivers from these links:

Nvidia Geforce drivers downloads:
http://www.nvidia.co...ers/drivers.asp

ATI Radeon drivers downloads:
http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

I updated the drivers for my ATI card. It didn't seem to do anything. The PC is still acting really strange. If it idles for any longer than 20 mins or so all of a sudden I can't even open a program without getting a message saying there isn't enough system resources to to that. I couldn't even log into my user account due to lack of resources. Something weird must have happened during the cleaning.

How much memory (RAM) do you have?
Is it possible it's over heating?

Try this:

You can use windows sfc (system file checker) You'd need your XP CD to make this work.
Click Start> Run> type sfc /scannow Note the space.
(Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

hmmm. I have a gig of ram. I don't see why it would be over heating. The fan seems to be running fine. Its a fairly new PC 5 months old. I'll run that system file checker and see what it says.
