Hi,

Win XP Acer Netbook began running very slow and wireless will not connect, but will see my modem. I can hardwire fine, which I am on the this netbook now. I have a extended warranty at Fry's took it there and they told me it was software related, corrupted windows or virus malware.. I took home and restored windows Alt+F10, did the 74 windows updates and am current now. I installed Malware Bytes and was clean there. I did the Avira and it found a Trojan horse {D24A3BE8-4CBB-48D0-81AD-ACAFA6C48B}/RP5/A0000661.exe which I had Avira remove. Ran Avira again and all was clean. Then did the HijackThis and sent to maddocktor2.com and Mr. C sent me here. any recommendations would be appreciated.

blaof39, no need to post the HJT or MBAM logs.
I removed them and left a link to your post at SWBW. MrC

Is a Acer Netbook that was running terribly slow and wireless would see networks but would not connect. Virus, malware caused? I did the recovery alt +F10 would that wipe hdd of any bad guys? After the recovery and windows updates, (did not clean the bloatware after recovery) I firstly did the Malware Bytes AntiMalware program, nothing. Then I loaded Avira (dont have log but it claimed to found a trojan horse {D24A3BE8-4CBB-48D0-81AD-ACAFA6C48B}/RP5/A0000661.exe I did have it remove that. Wireless still not connecting Next step was the HijackThis then send logs to your helpful site. Here is what you requested on your reply shown above. Thanks much… ps. bought netbook @ Frys with extended warranty, they say wireless is software related, I am beginning to think maybe is the card. I did have my service provider help run me through the pings and etc, all setting even in manual modes and could not send nor receive except that it will see my coonection and others on search wireless connections.

Hi and welcome to the WTT forums, sorry to hear of the problems with your netbook wireless.
Here's some thoughts on what has gone on so far and some suggestions on further actions.

1 According to your logs you are running McAfee as your anti-virus. However you also say that you loaded Avira and performed a scan…did you actually load Avira so that you had two anti virus applications running in memory (which is bad :( ) or was the Avira an on line scan that you did not need to install and have running?
2 Check in Device Manager to see that your wireless network adapter is being recognised and that there are no yellow or red markers against it.
3 Whilst connected to the Net via your network cable (cat 5 patch cable) update the drivers for your wireless network adapter
4 Reboot your computer and try the internet without the network cable to see if you can connect wirelessly to the Net.
5 In Network Connections, disable then enable your network adaptor.
6 Then click on Repair your connection……any improvement?
7 Make sure the Properties on your TCP/IP are set to auto in both cases.
8 Open a command prompt and release, then flush your dns cache, then renew……. here's the commands in case you have forgotten
Start>Run>type in the white box
cmd
press enter/ok
at the Dos prompt type
ipconfig /release
press Enter
ipconfig /flushdns
press Enter
ipconfig /renew
press Enter
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
press Enter
Exit
press Enter
9 now reboot your computer and see if there is any improvement
10 next step is to disable your firewall (as its possible for this to be "blocking")
11 log into your router and into the management and disable your encryption. Apply the changes, save them and exit
12 now try the Internet again wirelessly without your firewall and with no encryption
NOTE please only do a short test to see if you now have a good wireless connection…do not use an unencrypted wireless signal for anything other than a short test..get the encryption back as soon as possible, and use at least WPA and preferably WPA2 if your outfit allows it.. Make sure that the encryption you use and the password/passphrase is faithfully entered into the computer exactly as it is in the router
13 Some folks have been known to set WPA2 AES encryption on their router and set their computer to use WPA PSK….this does not work!…it must be an exact match.
Remember passwords are case sensitive….if you hit the caps lock key by mistake then it can be very frustrating when the machine won't connect.
14 reboot your computer after checking all these again….. if still no joy then
15 open a commnand prompt again and at the Dos prompt type:
ping bbc.co.uk
press Enter
please copy the output to us in your reply together with the output from the following
ipconfig /all
NOTE with all the commands given here the spaces are necessary, if in any doubt copy and paste so you are sure you have got them all correctly spaced.
Regards

Hi Thanks for fast reply; 1. Avira is not loaded into machine, was made into a boot cd, 2. Device Manager green and enabled for the Atheros wireless. 3. Drivers were current from website but did reinstall new with same version. 4. Upon reboot wireless still will see router/modem but not receive or send.. Cant get IP address 5. Disabled and enabled a few times with reboots and still the same. 6. On clicking repair, no improvement. 7. Properties in IP both set to Auto 8.Did the release, flush and renew, entered the "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" 9. Upon reboot still the same "cant find IP address" 10. Firewall temp disabled , still the same problem. Will check encryption here is the ping and the ipconfig /all file: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] © Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. Hi blauf39. Have you tried using the notebook where there is free wireless, like a public library, McDonalds, Coffee Shop or a friends house? That would eliminate your router/modem setup on the off chance it is causing the problem. Who is managing the wireless connection? If it's not Windows I would suggest changing it so that Windows does manage your wireless. 1. Open Services (Start then Run, type services.msc and press Enter) 2. Double click on Wireless Zero Configuration 3. Set Startup type to Automatic 4. Click the Start button to start the service 5. Click Apply then OK 6. Open Network Connections. 7. Right click on Wireless Network Connection, select Properties. 8. Click the Wireless Networks tab and check the "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" box. 9. Click OK. See if that makes a difference. If yes, then disable whatever was previously managing the wireless, either through the software itself or via msconfig.
Thanks did all the settings and still wont connect. The card sees the wireless but just cant find aquire the network address. even added the network address manually through AT&T's customer support. maybe is the card. Would not hook up at free wifi either. Any other ideas? Thanks again.
Is the wireless card built in or is it a PCMCIA plug in card? In either case, it sounds like a hardware problem on the laptop and adding a PCMCIA or USB Wireless card/device may be the only solution other than a system board replacement.
Yes, I am thinking is the card also… Is an internal card. Is an Acer Netbook. I have the Insurance on it. Extended Warranty. Took to Frys and they said is software problem.. and not covered. But the Internal wifi does see my modem/router Att Uverse, just wont connect manually or in auto connects. Did all the settings with their advanced tech also, the release ,flush and renew. Also did some advanced virus/malware detection and after finding a couple bad guys did a recovery and all the windows XP updates, checked for new drivers on internal wireless and that was current. This has been a learning experience even though is not doing wireless, hardwire is fine. I might get a USB for it.. any other possibilities I am open to. thanks :)
I'd beat on Fry' some more and make them fix it. Backup your data first as they will almost surely restore the laptop to factory state. When that doesn't fix it, then make them repair it or give you a new one. Don't take no for an answer.
@blauf39, You have not commented on steps 11, 12, and 13, this is defintely something you should check…….many folks get the encryption wrong in one way or another…… it has to be 100% correct for it to work Regards paws
