hey all! i am having this weird problem since last two days. I own two Pcs one at home one in my office. I saved few important files in my USB from my home PC and next day when i tried to open same USB, it was mounted successfully but the USB is not showing any file at all in its memory. I came back home and mounted it again in my home PC and all files were there as it is.. It was crazy. what could be the reason. Is this some virus. but my antivirus is not detecting any virus. what should i do? :(
There was nothing wrong with CatByte's suggestion - using a different USB stick will show you whether the problem is just that USB or for the computer in general. Try making sure hidden files/folders are showing on the computer that isn't seeing them. You could also try running CHKDSK (on the USB) in case the file-system has become corrupted. Failing that, try taking all the important files off the stick (at home), then format the stick, put the files back on and try again. Otherwise, let's see what our wonderful tech experts have to say on the matter.
As suggested by the other folks, it is worth verifying if any other flash drives have trouble being read on your office PC? If they work OK then it would be fairly safe to assume there may be some kind of file system trouble on the flash drive. Simply running a chkdsk on the drive might resolve your problem. Do this on your home machine while the drive is functioning normally. Right-click the drive in my computer, click properties, click the tools tab and check it for errors. Be sure to use the option to fix errors automatically. You do not need to check for surface defects or bad clusters. Are you aware of having to safely remove your USB devices before unplugging them if write caching (enabled by default) is on? If you fail to do this you will eventually corrupt your flash drive and important data. The safely remove hardware icon is located in the notification area in the bottom right corner of your screen. Another easy step to trying to fix this problem would be to transfer the data off of the flash drive and reformat it. Then transfer the data back to the drive. See if it works properly then. You might even try reformatting it on the office PC first.
