My friends laptop has been having a lot of problems lately. It is horribly slow. AdAware and AVG are finding multiple trojans that return even when they are deleted in Safe Mode and when using Google, any time you click on a search result it will take you to a different page. Here is the HJT Log:

Please follow the instructions:

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

When ComboFix finishes it shall produce a log. Please include it in your next reply.

Things I'll need in your reply:

  • ComboFix log
  • How is your computer now?
The internet is running a little better and when I search on google I am not redirected to strange sites. However, the computer is still running very slow and at startup I am getting an error about a file not being found. The file is uncdms.dll Do you know anything about this?

Attachments:

Zebadiah,

uncdms.dl <– - This is part of Windows Desktop Search. You can download and re-install it.
Here's a link:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917013 Download the 32-bit Windows XP package.

You will need to re-install iTunes also due to the infection.

NEXT

Please do a new scan with MBAM and post the log. Instructions for this are in my first post.

NEXT

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner or from Here.
  • Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
    • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
    • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:
  • Click on: Save Report As
  • Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
  • In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
  • Then, click: Save
  • Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.

Things I will need in your next post:

  • MBAM log
  • Kasperksy on-line scan log
  • How is your computer now
Again, I am sorry for the delay. I had hoped to post last night, but the online scan took several hours. When i turned on the computer today i noticed that startup speed was much better than usual, but opening applications (especially Firefox) is still taking a long time. Here are the two logs you requested. Thanks!
Hi Zebadiah,

We are almost finished.

Lets update your Java to make your system more secure

Go to your Control Panel and click on the Java Icon ( looks like a little coffee cup ) click on About and you should have Version 6 Update 20, if not proceed with the instructions.

Download the latest version Here save it, do not install it yet.

Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 20 <–The wording is confusing but this is what you need

  • Go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java
  • Reboot your computer
  • Install the latest version
You can verify the installation Here

NEXT

We need to update Adobe Reader also.

Start Adobe Reader
Go to Help > Check for updates.
Follow the instructions to update Adobe Reader to Version 9.2.3.

NEXT

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image)

but opening applications (especially Firefox) is still taking a long time

We've eliminated the infections that were on your system. Now to improve the performance you should defrag the Hard Drive.
This will help:

Download and run Auslogics Disc Defragmenter

Finally this is my Closing post:
  • How did I get infected in the first place ?

Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

  • Tutorial for System Restore <– Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.
  • WhattheTech
  • Grinler BleepingComputer
  • GeeksTo Go
  • Dslreports

You may consider also getting these tools:

SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlater will block bad sites from installing there junk, No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

WinPatrol
Will block any changes to your system and alert you to that change so you can either allow or block that change

Spybot Search and Destroy
Another great program to install, you can use the Immunize feature to block bad websites. If you install this program and also SpywareBlaster, then do not enable the teatimer as they will conflict.

We will keep this thread open for a couple of days. Please post back if you have any problems or questions.
Please post back when you have finished so this thread can be marked "Resolved".

Thank you for your patience and Keep Safe. :wavey:
