I just upgraded Norton 360 Premier today on my main work laptop computer and sh*t hit the fan. I'm using my home pc in the meantime, but desparately need my laptop working properly to get work done and meet my deadlines. I don't know if it is a virus or if Norton notgood it up (they won't take any responsibility and told me to call Microsoft…so I cancelled my upgrade since they wouldn't even try to help me). Anyway, here are my issues…

1. After downloading, I discovered that I can't open Internet Explorer 7…it'll start to open, but after 1-2 seconds it'll close. Sometimes (but not all) I get an error message indicating that it can't open and will shut down. I tried to open through "safe mode", through "not loading add-ins"…but nothing works…

2. After rebooting, I get an error message "RUNDLL: Error Loading C:\windows\otaworuc.dll The specified module could not be found". I googled the .dll file name and found absolutely ZERO on it…so I have no idea what this message means…

3. I tried installing AVG Free Virus protection in the meantime…by downloading the file on my home pc and sending it via e-mail to my work laptop (yes, I can get email through Outlook)….but it wouldn't work, I get the standard error message indicating it can't open and will shut down.

4. Also, I thought about doing a system restore…but for some reason it was turned off and no previous restore points were available (that I could see anyway)…so this indicates that it may be a virus, right??

Please, please help me out. Hopefully it is not a virus, but a quick fix…Your help is GREATLY appreciated…

I did manage to get a HJT log….

Hello ShawBuck and :welcome:

My name is JonTom.

  • Malware Logs can sometimes take a lot of time to research and interpret.
  • Please be patient while I try to assist with your problem. If at any time you do not understand what is required, please ask for further explanation.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Read every reply you receive carefully and thoroughly before carrying out the instructions. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive, as in some instances you may have to disconnect your computer from the Internet.
  • PLEASE NOTE: If you do not reply after 5 days your thread will be closed.

  • Please be aware that I am still in training, and all of my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advice.
  • This may cause a delay in response time, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.
  • I will reply back shortly with instructions.
Hello ShawBuck

Thank you for the log.

If you cannot connect the infected machine to the Internet you will have to transfer the required tools either by burning them to disk or by using a removal storage device (USB stick). Please let me know which method you choose.

I just upgraded Norton 360 Premier today

I cannot see any evidence of an Antivirus or Firewall on the infected machine. Before we install these we must clean the malware from your machine.

Until this has been done, please refrain from connecting to the internet unless absolutley neccessary as you run the risk of picking up more infections.

Before we begin any fixing, please make sure that you run Flash Disinfector on your laptop AND on your desktop.

  • Please download Flash Disinfector

    • Click here to download Flash Disinfector and save the file (called Flash_Disinfector.exe) to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Flash_Disinfector.exe icon to run the program and follow any prompts that may appear.
    • The program may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so if prompted.
    • Wait until Flash disinfector has finished scanning and then exit the program.
    • Reboot your computer.

  • exeHelper

    • Please download exeHelper by clicking here and save the file (called exeHelper.com) to your desktop.
    • Double click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up. Press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • Post the contents of log.txt (it Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com).
    • NOTE: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

  • Download and run OTL by Oldtimer

    • Please download OTL by Oldtimer by clicking here and save the file (called OTL.exe) to your desktop.
    • Close all open windows on your computer then Double click on the OTL.exe icon to run the program.
    • When OTL opens, underneath "Output" (at the top) select "Minimal Output".
    • Check the boxes beside "LOP Check" and "Purity Check".
    • Under Custom Scan paste this in:

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll

    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

    • Click the "Run Scan" button. Do not change any settings unless specifically told to do so. The scan will not take long.

    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows: OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
    • Note: These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
    • Please Copy and Paste the contents of both files in your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.

  • Please scan your system with GMER

    • Please download GMER from here and save the file to your desktop.
    • NOTE: The saved ".exe" file will have a completely random name. This is normal.

    • You can also download the zipped GMER program from here, here or here.
    • If you download GMER from one of the zipped links, unzip the file (called gmer.zip) to your desktop.

    • Before scanning, please make sure that all other running programs are closed and that no other actions (such as a scheduled antivirus scan) will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
    • Double click on the "randomname.exe" or "gmer.exe" to run the program.

    • Caution! These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries unless advised!
    • If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
    • Click on "NO".
    • In the right panel, you will see a number of boxes that have check marks placed next to them.
    • Leave these boxes as they are, but please ensure that the "Show all" box is un-checked.
    • Now click the "Scan" button.
    • Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity. This is normal.
    • Click on "OK".
    • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt".
    • Save the file where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
    • Post the contents of GMER.txt in your next reply.

In your next reply please provide the OTL logs and the GMER log. You may need more than one post to fit all of the information in.
Thanks JonTom…something bad is going on now with my laptop. Last night before your reply, I was able to get FireFox browser loaded (by downloading the program on my desktop and emailing it to my laptop)….I then loaded AVG Free Virus program and ran a scan…nothing really of note. I got your reply this afternoon and ran all 4 programs (Flash Disinfector, exeHelper, OTL, and GMER). The first three worked with no issues…during the last one, GMER, a blue screen popped up and saide "problem caused by uxddapow.sys" among a bunch of other technical stuff. I rebooted and tried again, and it seemed to work just fine. I don't know if it is supposed to take along time, but it was going on 40-45 min. and I left for dinner…came back and it looked like it was complete but the screen was frozen. I rebooted, and it wouldn't boot up….so I tried to boot up in safe mode. And it also stalled….it got to the part where it lists a bunch of files on the screen and stopped about half way down the screen…the last one was isapnp.sys. Please tell me I'm not notgood…I need the laptop to work over the weekend (since the last two days were spent trying to fix it) to meet deadlines on Monday…. Also, FireFox was working fine before I ran the requested programs…the only issue was it occasionally said "unable to connect" or "server not found" often, and I had to refresh and it then went to desired webpage… What do I do??? Thanks again for your help!!!
Hello ShawBuck

I need the laptop to work over the weekend

I appreciate your concern ShawBuck and I will try my very best to get you fixed up as quick as I can, but I cannot make any guarantees.

We need to get your machine back to a bootable state so I can take a look at some logs.

Please work your way through the following procedure. Do not rush, just take your time. If there is anything you do not understand, stop and ask.

  • Please do the following

    • Work you way through the following steps using an uninfected machine.

    • First, please download ISOBurner. This will allow you to burn REATOGO-X-PE ISO to a cd and make it bootable. Just install the programme, from there on in it is fairly automatic. Instructions.

    • Second, download OTLPE Network.iso and burn to a CD using ISO Burner. NOTE: This file is 429Mb in size so it may take some time to download.
    • When downloaded double click and this will then open ISOBurner to burn the file to CD.

    • After it has completed burning, put the CD into the infected computer and reboot.
    • Make sure the CD is set to be the first drive booted from. (This can be set in the bios).
    • When the computer is first started you should be given an option to boot to setup. You will be told which key to press to enter setup. As each computer is different you will need to look for a setting called Boot Order or similar.
    • Follow the instructions there to set the CD first in the order.
    • Save the changes, if you made any, and exit setup. The computer should now boot from the CD.
    • Please be patient as it is running from the CD and can be quiet slow. One of the first screens you will see is a confirmation it is booting from the CD. This will be followed by a screen saying starting Reatogo X PE. It may take a while to load the necessary files.
    • You should be presented with a light blue screen followed shortly by a Reatogo desktop. It will have what looks like a Swiss Army knife and some icons on it.
    • NOTE: You should now be able to connect to the Internet using the Firefox on the REATOGO desktop.

  • OTL

    • You mentioned that you ran OTL before you encountered problems.
    • I would like to see the log it produced (It will be on your desktop, or wherever you saved it to).
    • At the moment, you have the REATOGO desktop on your system.
    • You can access your "real" desktop through "My Computer" which is located on the REATOGO desktop. The OTL file log file should be there.

Please post the OTL log in your next reply. If you have any problems with the steps above come back and let me know.
Thanks JonTom…because of the severity of my issues and the time crunch I am under, I took my laptop to a computer guy this morning (Saturday). He was able to save my hard drive and then do a complete system restore. I got my laptop back this evening (about 7-ish) and am now just trying to get everything up and running…which I'm having issues with. I can't get my wireless enabled right now, so it's extremely frustrating. He seemed to think it was a virus, something about a 31M partition file that was created. I don't know what that means. But since I seem to have my virus/malware issure resolved, I don't know if you can help me… I truly appreciate your help. Hopefully I'll get it going soon!
Hello ShawBuck

I seem to have my virus/malware issure resolved

Thank you for letting us know.

I can't get my wireless enabled right now

If you are still having connection issues the best thing to do would be for you create a new thread in our Browsers, Internet and e mail forum:

http://forums.whatthetech.com/Browsers_Int…email_f123.html

Make sure to mention in your thread that you had malware issues, but that these issues appear to have been resolved. Then provide as much information about your situation as possible.

I am sure that one of our experts will be able to give you some excellent advice.

Good luck and Best Wishes
JonTom
