I'm hoping someone can help me with this problem. I have a cable modem connected to my computer and another family member has a wireless connection on the same line. My computer will not connect to the internet (limited or no connectivity), but her computer will connect through the wireless connection. I've tried repairing the connection, keeps saying it cannot renew my IP address. Had a service tech from the cable company come out, he brought a laptop and found that he could connect through the wireless connection but, again, when he plugged the ethernet cable from the modem directly into the laptop, he was unable to connect. My ethernet adapter is functioning properly, I tried disabling it and enabling it. Tried restarting the computer, power cycling the modem, pretty much everything I can think of. Neither I nor the service tech could figure out where the problem was coming from, anyone have any ideas?

Did the Tech do the obvious and replace the Cable Modem?

No. He seemed to be kind of against doing that, even though, like you said, it was the pretty obvious solution.

You need to call them back and get them to replace the modem. The onlt other possibility would be the Ethernet cable nless the Tech used a different one with his laptop.

Yeah that was the first thing he changed. I'm going to call tomorrow and try to get a new modem. Thanks. :)

Ok, so, got a new modem...same exact problem. Any ideas? The problem seems to be with the IP address, if that helps at all.

Very weird that your computer and the Techs laptop had the exact same problem. Oh well ...

Click on Start then Run and paste the following into the Run box, exactly as show, including double quotes:

cmd /c "ipconfig /all > postme.txt & ping yahoo.com >> postme.txt & notepad postme.txt & del postme.txt"

and press ENTER.

A file will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the contents here. Close the Notepad window and the file will be deleted and the Command Prompt window will also close.

I couldnt copy and paste the contents, had to write them down and retype them. Should have all the information right.

You are not getting an IP address from the cable modem.

Autoconfiguration IP Address.... : 169.254.191.114

Your computer is set to automatically obtain an IP address but Wwindows has assigned this one because it cannot find a DHCP server, which is what the modem is supposed to be.

Any yellow or red marks in Device Manager, Networking?

Click on Start then Run, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter
Expand Network adapters

If that's okay, give Dial--a-fix a try. Download the zip file then extract Dial-a-fix.exe and run it, no install needed.
Click on Tools (the Hammer) at the bottom then scroll down to Reset Networking Interfaces and select it, then click the GO button.
When it finishes, close Dial-a-fix then reboot and see if your connection is better.

Post results of ipconfig /all again please.

One more thing. The Cable Modem needs to be configured by the Cable Company to allow more than one computer to connect to it, at least that is the case for my Toshiba DAZ8823A modem from BrightHouse here in Fla. Provide the make and model of yours and we should be able to find the owners manual for it to check. You can have up to 3 (or more)computers connected to your Cable Modem. Wireless - 1 or more Ethernet - 1 USB - 1 Might want to check with them just in case. Stranger things have been overlooked.

Yup, Ethernet Adapter is working properly and enabled.

I cant download anything on that computer because it won't connect, I'll get that as soon as I can get a flash drive so i can download it on this computer and put it on the flash drive and take it back to mine.

I haven't changed anything, so it shouldn't be any different now, I dont think.

Agreed, don't need ipconfig / all until after you run Dial-a-fix as I mentioned.

Ok, so, downloaded dial-a-fix to this computer, got a flash drive, put it on the flash, took it to my computer, tried to extract the files and... "the archive is either in unsupported format or damaged.'

I'll try again tomorrow, I guess. Is there anything I can do if i get the same error message again?

How about extracting it on the computer you download it on? That will leave you with a folder named Dial-a-fix-v0.60.0.24 with two files in it:

Dial-a-fix.exe
secedit.exe.

Copy the folder or just the two files to your flash drive.

Got Dial a Fix on to my computer, ran it, ran the ipconfig/all command as before, the only change was "node type" changed from "unknown" to "broadcast". Everything else was the same, including the autonconfiguration IP Address. Tried repairing the connection, same problem. restarted, still no connection. tried disabling and enabling connection, same problem. ran ipconfig/all again, got the same original results (node type was back to being "unknown"). Used dial-a-fix again, ran ipconfig/all again and "node type" was back to being "broadcast". tried reparing connection again, same problem. Does the node type going from unknown to broadcast tell you anything about what the problem might be? Thanks again! Drew
