Hello!
First time poster, trying to help out a friend.
A long time tech enthusiast, my usual cure for infection is reformat & reinstall. I was hoping that I could find some help here to avoid that option this time around, and learn a thing or two about removing this sort of thing.

The machine:
- Toshiba Satellite A105 Laptop w/ WinXP SP3 and IE8.

Symptoms:
- Following links redirects to seemingly random websites. This happens in both IE8 and Safari.
- Locked out of task manager.
- Who knows what else?

So far I have disabled most of the startup items via msconfig, allowing the machine to boot much faster.
I have run a HijackThis log and startup list. I will also be following the "Are You Infected?" guide following this post.
I would really appreciate and help and education you can provide.

(1) UPDATE: I have followed the steps at "are you infected" link, from ATF to DDS. Included new logs as attachments. Running ClamWin while waiting for response.

(2) UPDATE: I have used Hitman 3.5.4 (DL'd from CNET) to successfully remove a google redirect rootkit. This, in addition to the "are you infected" steps here seem to have the machine running good. The startup items have been cleaned, their AV is turned on, installed Chrome and Firefox, and they are now going through a router instead of directly from modem to computer. Thanks for looking, let me know if there is anything glaring I should still take care of. I kept all of the apps and logs in a folder on their machine.
