Symptoms: slow to startup; occasionally stops midway in Windows startup; google and yahoo pages have 3 hexadecimal digits in top left of returned list page; cannot go to several virus info pages; stops install of Malwarbytes mbam-setup.exe.

Now have ZoneAlarm suite installed but it did not clean out virus/malware.

Thanks for any help

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

You could try System Restore.

1.
Click Start.

2.
Point to All Programs.

3.
Point to Accessories.

4.
Point to System Tools.

5.
Click System Restore.

6.
Follow the instructions on the wizard.

See if you can find a date the the PC worked.
I thought you beauty that solution will work. But no unfortunately. Windows restore, at several dates gives error of cannot restore to that point.
that worked - sort of. It ran and got half through extracting files and then stopped - still running according windows monitoring but jammed none the less.
Sorry I've had to wipe PC clean because of a due date for work. I was originally prepared to wait out the challenges and time and learn from the experience. Work raised its head - even on this second PC. Its a shame really as I (and ZoneAlarm* and a few other scanners) do not know what the malware is. * ZoneAlarm suite installed successfully from most recent version available as download but updates not connecting due to malware - ZA still could not find the problem. Thank you for all the help though LDT. Its been a help.
